MIR Spring Event 3/1/09

Are the BIG cars welcome?
Blackbenzz, I emailed you about a couple of 10-sec and 11-sec ImpalaSS's that are interested in making the trip over from Ohio. They're only Chevy's, but they're good looking and they're fairly quick

What he said. As long as the drivers are cool

Track day sounds like its going to be a blast. Anyone going to have any parts for sale?
SL55 in NY would hate to put 600+ miles just to run 13's Would like to get some input on pulley and ecu upgrade, is it worth the money? Are Mid 12s a safe bet?

The odds are very good that your SL wound run 12s on a cool, dry day at MIR. Whether it's mid 12s or high 12s would mostly depend on how clean your launch is.
There's no need at all to mod your car before heading to the track for the first time. In fact, it's very reasonable to get a baseline track time before you start modding. That way you can see how much your mods improve performance.
Pulley and ecu tune is the biggest bang-for-the-buck mod and is the "Stage 1" package for most tuners. The package does what it's supposed to; whether it's worth the money really depends on how much a person values the extra performance.

"depends on how much a person values the extra performance"
Great point, well i spent 10k on a stage motor for my GN in 1994 dollars and have yet to take it to the track or drive it as a matter of fact, lame i know. Your right about getting baseline numbers, at moments the car feels like a beast then again sometimes i get into it and its ho-hum. There's a stretch of road in my area 150th st. that's used for street racing, one day this week i'm going to see what the mile an hour is.
No one ever mentions injectors when modifying these cars, are the stock injectors good for 600+ horsepower? Last performance oriented question on this post..... Again thanks for the input, much appreciated Ed

The stock injectors are definitely good for 600 HP+. My SL55 has run 11.4@121. Given its weight (4,340 lbs without the driver) it has to be making something north of 600 HP and the injectors are stock.
Maybe I'll see you at MIR. I've got a slightly longer drive (1,000 miles round trip) but am starting to lean toward going. The November get together was a blast!

Im a car nut so the odds of making it are pretty good (99%). I actually purchased the car from ASC Mercedes in Virgina (2/04/09) not too far from the track. Would love to hear the history of your upgrades and times achieved after said upgrade, if available?
1000 miles round trip is basically a whole day of driving, i see why you would have some apprehension about attending. Making it their on Sat. would make the trip a lot easier, and the time spent on the track would be well worth it I'm sure.
"Maybe I'll see you at MIR" I'm sure if we run I'll get a nice view of your taillight's
If that's you car in your posts if so then our cars are twins. Blk chr and turbines.

The "normal" modding path is to start with a pulley and ECU tune, then add other stuff to improve airflow. I actually did the reverse and installed the pulley and ECU tune last. I also got in on the first wave with a handful of mods, all of which worked out but later versions were sometimes more effective and/or cheaper.
My "backwards" Stage 1 was:
- 80 mm throttle body, a custom production run organized by Vrus before VRP
- SLR cams, following in Jakpro's and Chiromikey's footsteps
- Evosport shorty headers, the only shorty on the market at the time
- Carbon fiber airbox, another Vrus project that became the VRP airbox
- Quaife differential
With that setup I could run 12.1@118, http://www.dragtimes.com/Mercedes-Be...lip-13766.html
I then added:
- VRP pulley
- VRP VR600 engine tune
- VRP extreme belt wrap
Which gave me the performance bump to 11.4@121, http://www.dragtimes.com/Mercedes-Be...lip-13186.html
At least two guys who are active in the MBWorld forum have stronger SL55s than mine. Mike (forum name = BMS) has a similar setup but with Kleemann headers (which eliminate the primary cat airflow restriction) and a VRP cam (which is hotter than the SLR cam). Also Sal (forum name = Urnext) has a similar setup but with VRP long tube headers (also eliminates the primary cat) and he either has or soon will be adding VRP cams.
In a nutshell, if you buy the complete performance package from Renntech, Kleemann, or VRP your car should also be able to run low to mid 11s and trap in the low to mid 120s. Other vendors also have some good products but not as complete a lineup, e.g. Evosport doesn't have a cam package, at least not that I know of.
The big decision is whether to do everything at once or in stages. I had a lot of fun staging things and being an early adopter but not everyone would feel the same way, of course.
Good luck! Have fun with it!!

Depending if my car gets here and gets done i might bring my 2005 G35 Turbo... but that all depends if everything goes as planned... which never happens but ill keep my fingers crossed

jmf...Have yet to see that color in person, i know all your knowledge hasn't come cheap or without some pain so THANKS! for all the information! Im looking at Fabspeed as my performance shop but haven't made any concrete decision yet, but they are closest to my location..its important to connect with a competent shop when it comes to these cars as replacement parts don't come cheap.

Bowtie Nut,
We'll be glad to have you guys run with us. This time I'll be the one chasing you but I don't have any power adders.
We are hoping to run low 11's all motor with the new set up. You'll need to spray to stay with me.
However Mikey will need to spot us a few car lengths no matter what.
Hope to see you guys there. Should be some great racing!!

Being that the track rental is less than 2 weeks away...do we have a head count of probables (assuming weather is not going to be an issue)?
I think we should try to set up some pre-race matchups. Not as "call-outs" for money races...but just to match up cars that are of even performance to run side by side in a friendly manner.
