All of this talk is irrelevent on the E55 until you find your air source. The VRP fangs ran into the same bottleneck at the radiator that everyone runs into. Until you get that area opened up, this is all YAP.
The cost is not that cheap if done right. The key is the Y-pipe (or box in my case). It needs to flow right and is in a tight spot. The rest is simple.
Then, if you are replacing the OEM airbox, you now have room to expand the intake manifolds (both in volume and outlet size). I have been waiting on these for some time and have now decided to just incorporate the design into the intake system. It will be a few pieces that come together. The number 1 benefit to this is that I will have open access to the IC and that is where the gains are..

I'm not talking about the Y-pipe. I am talking about the inlet for the intake system. Right now, the small holes next to the radiator are all we have. I agree that the Y pipe can be fabbed. I have a;lso seen lots of data on airflow and how critical the design of the y split is.

Another point. I assume anyone attempting major intake mods would replace the filter system as well. Putting much more air flow through without replacing the filters will add pressure and make them cave in. Given that, I figured everyone was swapping over to cone or some larger ones.

Anyone considered this design? Air scooped from front grill and routed under hood straight to filters. What about cut-outs on hood surface straight to filters? Just an idea...

I thought about using the windshield washer grill area. the placement needs to be in a high pressure area and te one pictured (like the Vorsteiner ones) are in a bad spot for the E55. Early on in the hood line or late at the widshield are the highest pressure spots. Obviously, the front will have the best pressure.

if the openings in the rad support are 2.75" tubing why use 3" tubing for the rest of the system? the air will only flow as fast as the smallest opening. use 2.75" tubing for the entire system and bring the cost down. btw needswing has had this setup for the 3.2 litre engine for months. cost 800$

The size doesn't fit a 2.75, especiallyon the driver's side. The holes need to be bigger.

thats my point! if the opening on the drivers side is only 2.75" why use 3" tubing from the throttle body to the rad support. its a waste of material and money. the pass side opening is 3" but the drivers side is only 2.75". this is the same for the 55's and the 32's. i have had mine measured and am building my own for now

Why not set up a system similar to the FANGS design (remove airboxes/replace with steel tubing), but have the cone filters pre-radiator? I've seen that picture a couple of times. The air coming through the radiator vents still provides fresh air. I'm just wondering if that'd provide any gains over the airbox setup.

Fangs are alive and well again!
I will be posting pics of the dual 3" fangs for my C55 tomorrow. These flow right into my 82mm TB and then into a matching 82mm SC inlet. The tubing will not taper down at any point and cone filters will be placed in the direct path of incoming air from the front grill. Aluminum shields will also surround the cone filters to prevent engine heat or water from entering....This is the last piece of the hardware mods before I take it to either Kleemann or Renntech for final ECU and TCU tuning.

I'd sure like an intake setup like this. It seems so simple to do; just steel piping from the Y-pipe into cone filters near the front grill. Someone should design one and start selling it.

It takes a year to make an intake? seems like a custom shorter but thicker RAD and opening the passages on either side of the rad core would make more sense. rather than restricting 3" piping down to accommodate a smaller opening.

I want the TCU also so that may cut down to list to either Kleemann or DynoComp.
I just need to see if the base dyno numbers with the previous "FD" tune is adequate for any further investment in this engine.
If it's mediocre, then I might just try boring out my extra block to 6.1, iron-sleeve it and throw some turbos on it to see what she can do. The only place that's done that was the shop that used to do it for Brabus. Trying to find a cheaper place that will do it, knows how and has done it before.

I hear that alot about intake mods but as you can see the cone filters are tucked in the corners behind the headlights so even LESS chance of water getting in than the factory setup. I tubes also slope slightly downwards from the Y-splitter so water will not be able to run up the pipes against gravity.
