I would say cut out the resonators and the secondary cats and throw in an x-pipe and see how you like it then go from there. If it's too much, put the cats back on.

ok, so I have the car back from the exhaust shop.
removed the 3rd and 4th cats
removed the centre muffler
x pipe install

QUALITY
in a word...smooth. very factory like. no crackling.

Quantity
it is louder than stock, just enough to detect a note.
still surprisingly quiet at idle, and under normal throttle applications.
inside, there is a tiny increase in volume....still quieter than i was expecting.

At full throttle, it has the deepest muted growl this side of a maserati.
IMPRESSIVE ....even go so far as to say perfect

In summary.
Subtle.
You would have to describe it as the ultimate factory exhaust ...rather than a modified exhaust.

we have seen the before and after pics countless times......but hey, its only bandwidth....

nice nice,

I was wondering if there is any sound quality if using double x pipe ?? the first x pipe replacing the h pipe and the other one replacing the resonator .... would it be necesarry ?

Saab Viggen, 72 Porsche
Newb here as you can tell by my first post. In the next year I'm planning on getting an E55 as ever since my friend and I test drove one back in 2006, i have wanted one. Just need to get rid of the Porsche and convince the wife that this will be a great family car. I'm learning as much as possible about this car, and I'm a pretty damn good mechanic. My question is in regards to the pic above. I see the cats coming off the manifolds, then I see the other 2 cats right after the cross over pipe, but is that a resonator/muffler that the two pipes connect too right before the rear axle?
Thanks all.

Setup looks good glad you like it! If you have time, please post up a sound clip, there are countless people on this board wondering the same thing you did when you started the thread and would love to hear your car.

I say next mod is headers... They REALLY wake up the car!

Will this setup cause any other issues, e.g. CEL codes/errors, issues passing smog, etc.?

Shouldn't have any problem passing CA smog, assuming the rest of the car is working order. Unless they wanna be picky and complain about the secondary cats

It looks like the new tubing is smaller than the stock? or maybe it's just bc there is a difference in color?

2 reasons.
the bend into the xpipe is a machine bend
the colour is deceptive

certainly not the best pipework I have ever seen
but it gives me sound

Q, it looks to me that the muffler shop used 2.5'' piping. Stock is 2.75''. If that is the case, you just slowed your car down.

We had a local muffler shop do a very similar job, 2.5'' pipes, on one of our clients 63 and he was down 25RWHP from his earlier baseline.

Have them go at least 3'', since the bends are also crushed.

by the pictures, you may be right...but it's still hard to tell. however, because of the fact that he removed secondary cats and the resonator and added a decent x-pipe, i would bet that he's still experiencing a net positive. also, he was going after (and achieved) a sound goal rather than a performance goal so it's probably a mute point.

Now that I look at it...you are right.
With the quick glance I gave it, I assumed factory was 3"
Teach me to not take the time out - and spell out what I want
....rather than dropping it off and saying call me when it is done.

As far as power is concerned...I could not tell you if it makes more or less.
I don't give it a hard time, to know if there is a gain.
What I will say is - the traction control is cutting in earlier now... !

On the bright side, note was my sole criteria
I have a 993 Turbo S for acceleration

I wish my car was quiet again  I think its the AMG mufflers that quiet it down alot.

I will be posting vids this weekend of my setup. I know its not a E55 but its similar. My setup is Kleemann headers to 3" dual pipes to a x-pipe (which I think is a properly done x pipe) back to dual magnaflow mufflers tack welded together to fit in the place of the OEM muffler. It is LOUD and not in a good way.

it's absolutely the amg mufflers that quiet down my system. however, an x-pipe that creates turbulence rather than merging gasses will also increase "sound". whether that's good or bad is quite subjective.

2006 E55 AMG
I have Vadim's mid section installed (no cats and x-pipe added) and it sounds mean. At first I thought the noise was a little much but after driving with it a couple of weeks I'm really begining to like it. Everyone that has been it my car loves the sound over stock. When I get a chance I'll post up a sound clip.

Chiromikey,

Since I believe that deleting the resonators will make it louder, I don't think turbulance is what I want. Can you recommend an x-pipe that does a good job at merging rather than creating turbulence?
