Every V12tt car has a revised part# to run the same trans that's in the Maybach. The trans numbers did change so earlier cars might have a different one in them. I don't know what the difference would be. My guess would be clutch packs. I did notice if you look up individual parts a lot of the parts have the 240 (maybach) designation to them.

Jak,
Thanks man. Looks like you guys have a great community over here. I'm trying to get up to speed with this Benz. This is my fastest pass to date. Not as fast as Marco , but moving out pretty good nonetheless.

Sorry for the partial thread hijack.

Track conditions with sticky tires and hard launches will usually result in the rear end or one of the axles letting go.
If that's the case then why is the Tranny always cited when they talk about the cars being limited.

I imagine the downtime on a project like this would be almost a year. Then you have to get into endless hours figuring out how to have the TCU eliminated, or reworked, so that the ECU can continue to function properly. That in itself may be a "mission impossible".
As for the cost and down time, dang it. It'd be a good way to shed a couple pounds though lol

Ok, question, why can't we simply convert our cars to work without the ECU-- much like an old muscle car? I know Benzes are over-engineered but damn...

Eveyrhting has a sensor in these cars. When it comes to electronics they are super sinsitive. Take my car for example...a little sensor broke (boost pressure sensor) albeit an important one and car completely losses power and runs like a 4cyl. Everything must be working in sync since everything has a value or input.

Gary, that pass was incredible. Just amazed on how you kept that thing straight. Insanely fast is an understatement.

I think people mention limitation with the tranny in two ways:

1. AMG engineers limiting the torque output from an unfettered 885lbs-ft of TQ to a "puny" 738lbs-ft to protect the tranny.

2. The actual torque limiting software in the TCU which cuts power to "safely" allow the tranny to shift under load.

You have to remember that no regular production car in the world has as much torque as the 65 engine does coming right from the factory. These are luxury cars and there wasn't a justification to having maximum torque available. I think the AMG enginners were overly conservative in their concern for the tranny itself. The 738lbs-ft tq figure seems like an odd figure at first blush, but it actually converts into 1,000 Newton Meters of torque (metric measure). That makes it seem somewhat arbitrary, like the AMG engineers said
"zer is no need to put all za POWER through zee tranny, zee tyres will melt like zee Hindenburgh....we will limit zee torque of 1,200 newton meters to 1,000 Newton meters...da...zat is a good number...no one makes even close to 1,000 newton meters of torque..."

Godspeed - Thanks man. The car had A LOT left in her, but the track just wasn't holding the power that day. Oh well.

I would imagine that if one were open to losing a lot of the functionality or luxuries provided by the stock computer, a stand alone engine management system would be ideal. If you could tune the engine and all driving parameters "out" of the stock ecu, then you could use a total different system for the cars driveline. I have no intimate knowledge of tuning vehicles, but if a tuner can tune out sensors such as O2 sensors, I think it could be possible to tune out other sensors.

If there is no computer telling the sensors what to do, they cease to function. Your crank position sensor or say your boost pressure sensor can break or fail and it wouldn't have any effect on the car because there is no computer sending messages based on those readings.

Right, I get what you mean about the sensors, but if you take the sensors out then they can't tell the car to limit anything right-- or recognize anythings "wrong" (ie: insane amount of power to tranny sets off check engine light)? Like, the car would work like a old muscle car basically... or am I missing something here? Pardon my ignorance, I'm not much of a tuner.

Isn't this still an option for the 65? Victor can you confirm?

I checked and it looks like the following cars:

Maybach 57/62
SL600/65
S600/65
CL600/65

Share the following transmission: 722.649 / W5A900 - Part Number A240 270 05 00

I also checked out the SL65 AMG Black Series ( VIN: WDBSK79F79F155818 ) and I see the same exact components.

Also looking at the components internally the clutch packs contain the same parts internally across all the above models.

With big thanks to Marcin (DSMED) I have successfully transfered the AMG "Speedshift" programming from V12Godspeed's CL65 TCU to my S600's TCU and the car now has "M" mode available along with the 65 shift program.

WoW!! too kool, thank you for gathering info. OK...How much for this factory AMG tcu speedshift program? & contact info? Did the programming change or lift any of the Torque limiters?

Somebody needs to get a hold of Jay's AMG tuned CL600 we need that file damnit!!

I did not pay anything-- Jody (V12Godspeed) gave me his physical TCU. I copied EVERYTHING off of it, coded with my VIN, wiped my TCU and flashed it with Jody's VIN coded file.

Find a friend with a SL65 and a friend that's nasty with SDS and you're in the "600 with 65 transmission" club.

I'd love JayCL's TCU!

As far as torque limits- how ever the limits are setup for the 65 that's how it is. Like I said the tranny mechanically is identical, just the TCU programming is different.

Behaves like any AMG car in M mode. No automatic upshifts and hits the limiter at around 5900 RPM.

Also the shift buttons on the steering wheel are enabled (if equipped with AMG steering wheel)

Agreed. Only if you have a stand alone correct? Not on our ECU's. It could definitely be done.
