This is the reason im in a W211 :(
Well this is the reason guys im in a W211 now not that im complaining or anything. But my cousin found this going through the auction sites tonight this makes me sad that i had to part with this car this way. Have to say the w210 55 is alot diffrent then the w211 but it does have its own qualitys that the w211 doesn't have.

It's the damned airbags, man!
I've seen sooooooo many cars with such minor damage, but they were totaled out because the cost of replacing a deployed airbag is effin' astronomical. Once those things go off, the insurance company usually isn't allowed to install used ones like they can with other car parts. Added together with the rest of the damage, that can easily push it over the edge and get it totaled.
And with this economy, hi-line cars aren't worth much to begin with, so it's easier than ever to get to have the repairs exceed 60%-70% of the value. Once you get into that range they usually just write it off.

The air bags aren't that expensive. It was $300 to replace the curtain airbag, $200 to replace the rear door airbag, and $110 to replace the one in the drivers seat. It was an additional $1000 for the door panel and $2500 to replace the alcantara headliner.
I can't imagine that the front airbags would be 10X the price of the other ones?

Can you buy it back from insurance ? I am sure you can make some sort of a deal with an insurance that if you want to keep the car. It doesn't seem total at all. If you know some body guys may be they can purchase the air bags at cheaper prices.

Yeah it was a mint car clean inside and out before the accident. But once u pop the hood itt needs some work. Headlights, headlight washing system, fan,condensor,radiator was bent, fender,bumper,grill,hood and also the abs and asp lights were on, plus the airbag, and I'm sure much more I didn't see. But as far as buying it back I asked them and they told me don't know if anybody has heard this before. But since the car was 9 yrs or newer the insurance company could not sell me my car back. But can't complain belive it or not I got back 24k for my car that was pretty shocking since I only paid 34 when I bout the car in 06. So all in all it worked out pretty good for me

Plus, the older the car = The more expensive a replacement airbag.

Ohh wow that's weird maybe every insurance company does it diffrent. But as far as my pay out yeah I was happy with the outcome. They also let me remove my wheels and other accessorys. They also gave me 1000 back for my headers n pully . That's what caught me by surpise the most lol
