steering wheel and easy entry problem

This morning my steering wheel didn't feel like moving
(it's stuck in the bottom position) and does not
go up to exit the car

The steering wheel moves forward and back but not up and down...
dammit

I hear the motor trying to adjust but no movement

Soo I turned off the easy entry option soo the motor don't burn out

What up with it????

After doing some research on this problem myself (mine does the same thing but its all the way up) it sounds like there is a plastic connector that goes from the motor to the column that breaks pretty often. The part is $5, but if anybody has a how-to or some info on how to replace it I would like to see it.

w211 e55 amg
I also had the problem on my e55.
This happens if you try to move forward or back seat with the door open.
Solution: reprogramming via StarDiag

Not in my case...the actual coupler is boken in half. the half that come out of the motor is spinning freely... I'll be back to normal by tomorrow..... F%$K the $tealer!!!!!!!!!!!!

My steering wheel just started working out of the blue just the other day. Is there a button or something I accidentally pushed? lol

I have a similar issue, my steering wheel will go out and in, but not up and down. HOWEVER, I don't hear anything other than a click when I push the lever up or down. I don't hear any motor spinning (at least not that my ears can pick up). Is the motor an obvious sound? Or do I need to stick my head under the dash to actually hear it? Also, does anyone have any suggestions on this beyond the possible broken coupler?

My E55 up/down function broke tonight. The steering wheel only goes in and out, not up and down. I can hear the motor running but the wheel won't budge. It's stuck in the up position. Anyone know what part went out or am I looking at a $1K visit to the stealer?

Had that exact issue on the CLK500

$11 part and $450 in labor. Thank goodness for the warranty. It's called a coupler. Its in the area of the steering column motor.

Pics of snapped coupler:

That part doesn't look too complicated, but I'm sure it's buried way down in the steering column somewhere. Is this something a handy person could tackle themselves or best to have the stealer replace it? Does anyone happen to have the part number for this coupler for the E55?

Had enough of driving around with my wheel stuck in the highest tilt position so I tackled this nightmare of a project tonight. Let me tell you this is no trivial job and you will have to essentially rip your entire dash apart to get to a $6 broken nylon/rubber wishbone coupling. You need to take your time to carefully disassemble everything without breaking anything. The following site was invaluable as taking this car apart is a lot like a puzzle:

http://bayhas.com/mercedes/w211/cont..._dashboard.htm

This project is not for the faint hearted so if you want to tackle this yourself, be honest about your mechanical abilities before you tear into your center console and dash. If you do it yourself, you'll save yourself $400-$500 and know the job was done right. I'm heading to the dealer in the morning to pickup part #2034620678.

Can't wait to have my steering wheel back in the low position, but I will never turn that Easy Entry feature back on again. Too much wear and tear on that tilt/wishbone coupling and risk of breaking it again.

another reason I turned off the easy entry. it's just one more thing that I don't want to fix when it breaks.

All back together and working perfectly. Next project is fixing the dynamic seats if I can find a new or used air motor.

Took about 5-6 hours for disassembly and maybe 4-5 hours reassembly. Hope I never have to do it again.
