Scotch Brite is a lot more aggressive than #0000 steel wool.

btw, has anybody actually researched this? I did and all the detailers on the forums (Autopia, etc..) say #0000 steel wool (soaked in glass cleaner fluid helps) and metal polish is the professional way of doing it.

I'm happy to know I wasn't completely off base

With so many good products out there... Look for something that contains a ploymer sealant to protect your paint from etching caused by bird droppings and bug guts.

Yes, the exhaust tips are stainless, use the aluminum on ss tip only.

Ahhh ... I see. Didn't know that. Thought they were just Chromed steel.

If they're stainless, I'll bet some Blue away will clean them up in a snap. Then some SimiChrome to make them shine like a mirror.

On stainless pipes, I remove them, give em a light muratic acid/water bath (To remove the gold) and put them to the buffing wheel. Makes them shine like a mirror.

If it's stainless steel, then no problem at all.

I thought they were chrome.

I woulda felt kinda ripped off by AMG/MB if they were chrome!

p.s., I just spent $695 for a pair of OEM stainless steel tips for my P-car

I use P21s polish with an old wash cloth and if there is serious work to be done, I break out the Reynolds Wrap. Aluminum foil is still abrasive yet it is softer than chrome or stainless steel, therefore it gives and absorbs debris instead of marring the tips. It kind of works like a clay bar on paint, plus it is super cheap.

WTF! The OP owns a E63 and he can't afford a buffer. I mean I know the market has been down but seriously?

LOL - I got laid off, over a year ago, been pursing entrepreneur type stuff since, it will eventually make me a lot of money, but until then, I am poor.

To me, the best metal polish is Mother's, I have been using it for over 15 years. The best way to polish the exhaust tip is to use an old cotton sock. Its got a good grip, just pull left and right (after scraping the ss tips with an aluminum bar with a flat edge or an aluminum coin). When polishing make sure to put more Mother's when its used up, otherwise it does nothing.

I ditched the factory exhaust on my P-car and installed a GHL solid stainless with crossover. Sounds and performs great!

Yeah, I ditched mine too. But I have a 993 air cooled. Got my cores custom redone by a guy up in NorCal and they sound almost like Fabspeed Supercups but without that nasty drone. The tips are OEM stainless wide ovals that I had to order from Belgium.... but hey, they look good

You know, I use backing soda to clean off my glass top stove with a damp sponge, I bet it would work well on those tips. Let you know tomorrow.
