I read the review in the new car and driver and I am still shaking from it. 0-60 in 4.5 seconds? 1/4 mile in 12.7 @ 117? I mean, 117 mph, that is faster then a z06, 911 turbo, 360 modena, and 03 cobra, I still can't believe it. Not to mention 76k is not ridiculous at all, seeing as m5's are marked up to 85k in some dealerships. I recently purchased an e46 m3 and it sucks that I will have to run for the hills when I see an amg mercedes 4 door sedan coming. Maybe in the next couple of years I will have to get an e55, AMG is blowing everyone away.

2000 BMW 540i
gimpy,
As a long time BMW person, I had another issue. Marriage and a wife who can't drive a stick caused me to get an automatic 540i. My research had some good things to say about the E55 and so I jumped in. I agree that stick or not, the E55 will be big fun. I am also hedging to see if the V-10 550 HP M6 with SMG II will allow for enough ease of use for my wife. In the mean time I can't wait to beat 6'4'' folks stuffed in to porsches.

With Kleemann, MKB or Renntech, it will easily be in new viper territory!
Now that is SICK
I want to see the face of the new viper owner who gets his doors blown off by a 4-door Benz

Gimpy,
Really though, did you buy a M3 because it is fast in a straight line? What about driver involvment and tracking ability? Surely the demographic of M3 owners and E55 owners do not overlap too much. Or maybe they do when people are looking for the latest and fastest (straight line). I'm just making this comment and wondering why you want to sell your M3.

As for the E55, while it may be incredibly fast in a straight line, I'm more dubious of its handling potential if the suspension remains pretty much the same as an E500. While the E500 is no slouch itself (especially on the hardest setting!) it's definitely no M3. I would agree with Justin that I don't think there will be that much overlap in the demographics.

Guys, i beg to differ I currently have an 02 M3 SMG and will trade it for the 04 E55 AMG.
Why?
Because the M3 although a great car, is maxed out! you cannot safely add any hp, i'm used to the 333 hp. The SMG is great for me, but a bit of a pain for my wife, we dont have many corners in FL, so i dont need race car handling, and the 4 doors will sure help with the kids.
The E55 has GREAT potential for adding hp and with 476hp and 516 lb/ft is a bargin compared to a 911 tt with 415 hp for $118k (another car i considered).
If i get more time for track days then a 'pure' sports car is no the cards but the E55 is just so practical for us in sooooo many ways. A dragster disguised as a limo

athlon70, that is James Cannon's 2002 E55, supercharged, it was made by Renntech, that car is putting 440 RWHP (536 HP at the cranck, or engine), is best time on street tires is 12.109 I think.
It is not your tipical factory E55 here is a couple of links to this car:

There has to be an easy way for Cannon to get under 12s. Tires? Temp? Race gas? I know you wanted to do it as a street car, but why not humor us and post a sub-12 slip. Please...

Thank you, this post I agree with completely. I do not intend to trade my m3 though, i think an e55 and an m3 can coexist peacefully in one garage. It would be fun to pick which one to drive everyday

04 E55 tectite grey/charcol....traded 01 E55
I own both an 02 M3 cabrio and 01 e55, and are currently 3rd at dealership for new e55. I think the e55 is the perfect sedan, power, control, comfort; perfect for the daily commute. The M3 ride is much harsher, however, rewards the driver with an amazing road feel and enough power and torque for loads of fun.
Both machines are amazing. I had to buy a honda element, however, for the winter
