HID Replacement Bulb Question????

Went to dealer for some warranty issues and also had a burnt out HID headlight. After inspection, SA said it was a burnt out bulb and it would cost $200 to replace and install a new one. He suggested denying the install and buying the bulbs outside and replacing it myself for way cheaper.

I understand the replacement is D2S bulbs. Are they all the same or do we need a specific one for our cars? I found many online on ebay but don't want to buy the wrong one or a POS for the matter. I was going to buy this one below. According to a fitment guide, Acura uses the same D2S bulbs as well.

Any advice? Any better vendors to get bulbs from? Thanks in advance.

I got 2 replacement D2S bulbs from Ben @ DCT for 50$ shipped. I only replaced one since the 4300k matched my other OEM Phillips bulb perfectly so I still have a spare.

I had one of my bulbs replaced under warranty without issue. It did not go out but was discolored.

I have both of my stock 4300K bulbs, as I upgraded to 5000K ones. I can sell them to you for $50 if you want. They are from a 2004 E55 w/ the bixenon package.

I got the replacement bulbs. I changed them out and still got the same error. "Low Right Beam." I swapped the new bulbs on each side and got the and same error. That eliminates the bulbs being burnt out.

Behind each bulb is a small black box that has a small wire harness to it. What is that? The ballast? I swapped the black boxes on each side, same thing.

Am I doing something wrong? What are other possible issues or secenerios I could try? If not, I'm taking it back to the dealer. Thanks in advance.

Again, if the car is under factory warranty, they should replace the bulbs for free. And don't mess too much with the balasts if it is under warranty just in case you break something and they void the cost of the repairs.

What replacement bulbs did you use? Did you use those ebay "high quality" D2S's from Hong Kong? What was the actual manufacturer(listed on the bulbs plastic housing)? Osram and Phillips are generally the only OEM manufactureres.

I don't think bulbs are covered under warranty. You can get replacement HID bulbs from a number of places online. They can range from $25 per bulb to as high as $250.

The $25 HID bulbs you can get on eBay. They will work, but I don't know how long they will last. Personally, I think you'll probably have to spend around $100/bulb to get into "quality" ones.

So the black box behind the bulb is the ballast? its not a separate unit someplace else?

I don't remember on the E55. But I know that's how it's setup on a particular BMW.

4 wheeled car.
I bought 6000K bulbs on eBay for $34 shipped or so back around May/June 2008. By now, the bulbs have lost their 6000k color and look closer to 4500k. Not only that but they seem dimmer. So the truth is you DO get what you pay for. My friend got $250 Philips Ultinon bulbs and they look good as new.

Make sure the ballast is plugged in... there is a tiny little 4-wire (I think) harness that plugs in to one corner of the ballast box. PITA to get to if you have large hands.
