Question Is there a reason why there is no AMG W212 subforum?

Hi,

Just wondering when will an AMG W212 subforum show up here?

Also, will the W212 platform ever get a hybrid ?

Thx in advance.

questions about the shifter for the E63

Russ, do you know if the center column floor shifter has a "+" and "-" gate for semi-manual ? I understand the E63 has paddles to do allow shifting, but just wondering if the floor shifter allows it as well.

Also, do you know if the shift is side to side or forward/backwards.

Sorry for the questions~ And, congratulations on your new car. I bet waiting is an agony... cheers.

Doesn't look like it allows manual shifting from the shifter.

Yea, I read that shifting is only done using the paddle shifters. The center stick thingy does not shift. Strange in my mind, I like having the option of shifting in the center for whatever reason especially during a turn.

maybe they are going to finally do it right and instead of shifting side to side it will be shift up to grab the next gear and pull down to down shift.

^^The center gear selector will not change gears. Paddles only. But yes, the side to side thing should make way for a forward and backward pathway.

NO, I hate that. The side to side is the best, IMO.
It's been like that forever in MBZ and it needs to remain. I hate the up and down, too easy to accidentally shift.
Left for down, and Right for up is best..

to each is his own, have your ever driven a car with a ratchet shifter like a B&M etc in a muscle car? Even my Acura has up and down and in order to mishift I would have to hit it up twice or down twice to skip a gear it's virtually impossible to mishift. If you have free time for ****s and giggles go test drive a TL or TSX and you will see what I mean, but again different strokes for different folks

Oh crap, you got it.

Thanks for the picture, QuadBenz. The shifter looks like it has no gate for + and -.

It is difficult to use the paddles (when turning the steering wheel) when you are doing fast turns and you want downshift. :-(

q.smiley,
i agree with you. it is difficult to use the paddles (when turning the steering wheel) when you are doing a fast turn and you want to downshift. at least, that is my experience.

the paddles are great for high speed runs in twisty roads and you gotta have both hands on the wheel. But, nothing beats the feeling when you gotta have to drop a gear using the stick and whip a fast turn! ;-)

If MB will is going to do something retarded like only being able to use the paddles then they need to attach them to the steering column instead of the steering wheel.

It's not IF. That's IS the system. Ive watched every german car review show, and they all mention it. Quite peculiar if you ask me. Just dont forget how many times you turn the wheel before you might need to shift

Another point Im interested about is: how much of a pain in the butt is it gonna be to drop the new E. As we've all seen, it rides pretty high up there. The fact that it has air ride in the back and conventional steel springs in the front is going to require you to use two different systems. PAIN in the butt. Im sure the tuners will come up with something, but i'd rather front and back were the same.

Isn't this opposite what's "normal"? I've seen some race footage of sequential shifters, and IIRC the "norm" is to hit it forward for downshifting, and pull it back for upshifting.

FWIW, I don't mind MB's implementation of the side-to-side Speedshift function. If you're used to driving a manual, it's pretty natural... because pulling forward could be up or down, as could pulling back - but universally, as you work your way right, you're upshifting, and as you work your way left, you're downshifting. Same here (at least, in prior models that allowed it).

. Again IMO the Japanese have it down correctly. Think about the concept push up to go up a gear and pull down to go down a gear. It can't get any easier than that. Think back to the old console shifters it went PND321 to go down a gear you have to pull down and yes back then you could skip a gear if you push to far but in the Acura's for example in Manual mode the shifter becomes a ratchet shifter. As I said before if you have some free time go and test drive a TSX or a TL put it in Manual mode and shift away. To me the side to side just feels floppy. Correct me if I am wrong but doesn't Porsche and their Triptonic trans shift up and down? How about the old M5?

I HAVE A GOOD QUESTION. WHEN ARE WE GOING TO SEE THE W211 E55/63 STOCK VS A STOCK W212 E63 .

On the OP I guess once more people get into them and onto the forum.

+1 Dyin' to see that.

Also can't wait to LISTEN to a new E63 crack off some downshifts w/its new MCT clutch transmission
