Buy the tool (it's a shop dipstick). Is yours leaking? If so there is a TSB on the electrical connector O ring. Other than that, a flush every 40,000 miles and you should be able to get 120K miles out of the transmission.

This is why we need the E63 and E55 forums split.
The above answer is correct for a 55 but not the 63.
The 63 has no way at all to measure unless you are at the shop. You monitor the trans temp on SDS or STAR. Once it is at the right level you open the drain plug and see if any fluid comes out. If yes, it was too full and just corrected itself. If no, it might be low.

Like to add the fluids are different too, MB claimed back-wards compatibility on the new 7G 722.9 transmission fluid to the 5 speed, but I have read some posts that indicate harsher shifts with the new fluid in a 55s 5 speed 722.6
