E55 Brake replacement and bleeding system
I cant find any threads that give a DIY step by step guide for replacing the brake discs or pads.
I have changed all the brakes on all my cars over the years but I have not done a car with the SBC brake system. My understanding is that this needs to be switched off before you can push the pistons back in the caliper.
cheers

you have to disconnect the SBC harness connector before attempting to change the pads.
In order to bleed the system you have to do it via STAR or a pressure bleeder. you cannot bleed the system by pushing on the brake pedal and opening the bleed valve.

where is the harness conector located exactly? in the engine bay or is it under the dash board?
have you changed them yourself along with the discs?

it is located on the front left side of the engine bay, it looks like the typical ABS unit, disconnect that connector. i would also disconnect battery just to be on the safe side.

anybody know the reason why the SBC needs to be disconnected?
I have switched pads for front and back a few times.. and never had an issue.
I think its something easy to do, but I really never had an issue.
Bleeding the system I have never done.. so I'm interested to know if the STAR sys is needed.

If you say that you have changed them with out needing to switch off the system then thats great and makes for a nice simple quick job to do.
I know of cheaper hand held computers on ebay that allow switching off of the SBC.

If a person or finger was near the caliper, bad.
Count your blessings, all the items in the thread

will cause the SBC to calibrate (pressure up).
The SBC is very very complex and dangerous, consult the WIS before attempting any service work,
It is not possible to bleed or flush SBC with out STAR.

I have only changed my pads while the car suspended on a lift.
nobody inside the car and only 1 tech working on it. So the changes of using the hand brake, key ignition, opening the door were very low.
Next time, I will just disconnect the SBC and battery to be safe.

Parts are probably close to $600.
If it is for the fronts only you will need to by some KY before you drop the car off

The rotors are the cheapest part on our car and the install is VERY straight forward. Brembos are a breeze to work on. Toughest part is getting the rotors off.
Did the rears yesterday in about an hour..give or take because they were original (7 years) and the set screw was being a pia. Nothing a torch couldn't solve.
You can bleed the fluid with a motive pressurized bleeder, but won't get every last drop.
My advice is do the rotors and pads yourself and shop around for an Indy to swap the fluid.
