First Kid on the Block With a 2010 E63 / Let the Hating Begin….
My local dealer got their first 2010 E63s about a month ago, so I am surprised that I have not seen anyone posting here about buying one. Perhaps some people in here have already bought one, but did not want to suffer the likely negative comments from the 2010 E63 haters. I can understand why the styling might be a turn off for some. Of course, the original E63 was (and is?) also very controversial to many E55 owners in here.
Well, I picked up a 2010 E63 up today, so I just might be the first kid on this block. For those who hate its styling, you are welcome to heap your derision on my choice. For those who are interested in getting some honest feedback on how the car compares to the original E63, I will do my best to provide that.
The exterior styling has really grown on me. There are some really nice design features. I particularly like the way the center of the bumper has the lower part blacked out to make the lower grille area look bigger and more aggressive. The LED daytime running lights look great.
Regarding the interior,
Dislikes: There is no good place to place my Blackberry. The storage area that holds the ash tray is smaller than before. They eliminated the small storage cubby that popped out from the dash next to the glove compartment. I guess I will stick it in one of the cup holders. To put the car into Park, you have to press the “P” button. It’s a little odd to not be able to move the shifter into Park. The dash is more cluttered than the old dash. At night, you can see the glow of the 3rd brake light in the rear window when braking.
Likes: The new control knob interface is an improvement over the old system. I like that the screen has been raised up higher so that you don’t have to take your eyes off the road. There is a rear camera when backing up. The nav screen can play DVDs when parked. The Drive Dynamic seats are back, if ordered. This includes a pulsing massage feature. There is some nice accent lighting that shows up under the burl dash trim and halfway up the door panels. There is a light inside the storage cubby between the seats. The seat belt mechanism gives you a little tug to snug up the belt. There are voice commands available for the navi, radio, and other controls. The dash shows the temperature of both the engine oil and coolant in Fahrenheit, (not Celsius or Centigrade or whatever it used to be). This matches the scale used to show the outside air temperature. Like most things in the car, this can be programmed otherwise if desired for you foreign metric-oriented chaps.
Misc Notes: The Burl Walnut Dash trim is darker on this car than on previous cars. I think it looks good…better than the Black Ash trim. The storage compartment under the front passenger is now empty. I assume they moved the first aid kit to the trunk. The battery has been moved from the area next to the spare to the right rear of the engine compartment. While it gives some more open space for storage next to the spare, this is not a good move if one is interested in keeping the center of gravity low.
Driving the car
Race start. I have not tried this feature out, but I love the fact that it exists on the car. If you do want to win a stoplight race, this will greatly improve your chances by reducing driver error.
Automatic High Beam Dimming – my previous cars never had this, but it might have been available. It’s a pretty cool feature. The shift from High to Low is not abrupt like in all other cars. Its sort of gradual.
The car’s handling is much improved, though I have not had much seat time. The turn in is much sharper and there is less body roll. The throttle response is definitely more sensitive, which I think is an improvement. I have always felt that the original E63’s throttle was not sensitive enough. The car sounds great…louder than the previous version.
That’s all for now. Bring it on!

2006 Mercedes E55
Congrats on the new car.
Silver is the fastest color. The styling is also growing on me. I would not take a previous gen E63 over my E55 but in the new body with the transmission changes etc I think the 63 engine will be harder to bash. Styling is always personal and hard to argue it becomes a religous discussion.

I'm interested in one of these, and feedback from all who have made the plunge. A "212 E63" space needs to be added to the 210,211,E55,E63 section. Administrator, if you please?

Nice car, congrats on the purchase! IMO sure it would be nice to have the latest and greatest but in this day and age who wants to spend $100k on a car knowing that it will be worth $50-60k within 2yrs. Even if you're rolling in the $$ it's still a ball buster to know that you just lost 50-60k on your 100k car. Cars are bad investments anyway. Most of us E55/W211 E63 owners that bought our cars new know exactly what I'm talking about! I think there have been a few SL,CL and S65 owners that have jumped off a bridge within the 1st 2yrs of ownership. They lost somewhere in the neighborhood of 100k within 2yrs. So I dont think its a case of haters, I think consumers have gotten smarter. again this is just my opinion

Gotta pay to play...always have always will

No car, which is fundamentally just transportation afterall, is worth $100K. It is true of a great many things in life (watches & Hi-Fi are two that come readily to mind) - in order to get that last 10-15% in performance, quality, ect. you are gonna pay....big time.
Is the E55 a better value, no question. But no one buys an E55 simply to get from point A to point B. They are purchased by enthusiats. That said the 212 E63 is a markedly superior ride. Just from a balance, handling and technological standpoint.
Now if you want to argue the merrits of a CTS-V versus the 212.....

Congrats man and enjoy! If i had the scratch i would be driving one right now instead of typing this.

Just to be clear, my "hating" reference is tongue-in-cheek. I am not implying jealousy on anyone's part. Its a reference to the original E55 vs E63 debate that raged on when the 2007 E63 first came out. Also, the new styling of the 2010 E63 seems to have few admirers in here, so I expect few positive comments from anyone.
As a former E55 owner, I understand the love of that torque monster engine. I still miss it. If it were still offered as an option on the new car, I might have gotten it.

The 2010 E63 is a great machine. I got seat time in one and handling is much improved and the tests the car has gone through so far (car and driver etc) have proven that.
I got seat time in one with the Performance package with the 19 in wheels and I think an added rear diff...not sure how much of a difference it makes but handled very very well

I want to know about the "Pre-Safe" functionality.
At Laguna Seca AMG Academy, the E63 Pre-Safe feature would get in the way of doing proper trail breaking into a turn. When you nailed the breaks to slow down for a turn, the Pre-Safe jumps in and does not back off immediately when you lift your foot. There is a good half second delay where it feels like the pedal is falling away from your foot.
Does ESP-Sport eliminate the function? Does no ESP eliminate the function?
Just curious. If it can not be defeated, it hurts the track performance of the car almost as much as the benefits gained by the new ESP-Sport and front suspension.

2014 CTS-V (6spd, phantom grey), 2010 Cadillac Escalade ESV (black raven)
Congratulations!
I thought Car & Driver's comparo of the E63, CTS-V, XF-R was spot on.
Plan on getting it once my current lease ends.
My only complaint is that the LSD does not come standard on a car of this caliber...

Being at the dealership every day of my life, i get to spend a lot of time with the new 212. I am in love with this car & can't wait to get my hands on one when i'm done with my 55.

Count me as one who didnt like the looks at first....but those were just pictures....in real life---they are verrry nice! much nicer than E55's or the older E63's(imho).
Some cars just dont look that great in pics but do in real life....or vice versa.
I saw a lincoln MKS the other day---what an UGLY machine. Even my wife who doesnt car about cars said---"no wonder people dont buy american cars"
congrats...
