WHY WON'T MY TRANNY STAY IN M MODE?

So I am driving my car tonight in M mode and when I get on it the car automatically switches to S mode. Has anyone else had this problem?

might be caused by a bad oil sensor. merc knows about it.

No idea... here's a question for you, somewhat on the subject, when you're in S mode, can you use the paddles to upshift and downshift, or do you have to be in M mode? I have to be in M mode, but my boy's E55's I forgot what year, upshifts and downshifts in S mode.. wtf..

Just a thought.
Do the sneaky ecu reset
Also get a mb dipstick tool and make sure the tranmission fluid is at the correct level

here's what i'm talking about...

Date: June 20, 2008

Order No.: P-B-18.40/39

Supercedes:

Group: 18

SUBJECT:
Model 171.473, Equipped with Engine M113.989
Model 203.065, Equipped with Engine M112.961
Model 203.076, Equipped with Engine M113.988
Model 209.376/476, Equipped with Engine M113.987
Model 211.076/276, Equipped with Engine M113.990
Model 219.376, Equipped with Engine M113.990
Model 230.472, Equipped with Engine M113.995
Model 230.474, Equipped with Engine M113.992

Transmission Mode Changes from M to S

If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles of the transmission mode changing by itself from M to S/C while driving, the engine oil sensor may be the cause. The engine control unit may contain no stored faults codes or the fault codes shown above. To resolve, install engine oil sensor A006 153 59 28.

hope this helps

I would try this: Unplug the ECU wait 15 min then plug it back in. See if that helps. If not unplug the TCU. The TCU controls what mode you are in, like S, W, C, M, and what not. Pending on your car. There is a slight possibility the the TCU wires are coated with to much transmission fluid. This is common with MB TCU's. This maybe causing the issue. I would definitely unplug the ECU and if that fails do the same to the TCU.

My Car will shift up & down in S mode but it won't manually downshift in S mode like it does in M mode. That is weird that your car won't allow you to manually shift in M mode.

I will give my MB tech both this and O-55's post info. This should fix the issue.

Thanks for the feedback!!

Mine upshifts and downshifts in both S and C mode - it's actually annoying to the wife because she downshifts to 4th all the time when turning because her finger hits the button on the back of the steering wheel. I personally love it because when I'm merging from 95 to the beltway - I drop it into 3 and. . .

This is my #1 gripe with the shift buttons. I hit it all the time. I'm getting real good at knowing when i hit it though. When my lady drives my car I always find myself shifting the car on out of the gear she is stuck in.

no I can manually down and up shift with M mode only. But in S mode, paddles/buttons don't do anything. Maybe because I have an '03? I'm taking it to service soon anyway, so I'll get it looked at.

True, only 04-up can use the wheel buttons to shift in S mode. 03's can only use the buttons in M

His wife crazy
My '03 is the same and I prefer it this way, if I want to use the paddles, it's easy enough to select M mode. No surprise shifts here.

at first when i put my tranny in M mode. it used to go all the way to redline and then shifts by itself & on S/C mode i can use the paddles.

nut a noticed after i tuned it with PC, if it is in M mode. it wont shift. an arrow ( ^ ) shows when it reaches redline.

i like it like this more.

i think it is a software issue more than a hardware.

regards,

so the tranny has been repaired and O-55 was right, bad oil sensor. I would recommend that anyone that has this issue should print this thread out and show your tech, if I would not have given this info to my tech he may not have figured it out.
