check your larger pulley for wobble!

This has been posted before but I was curious and tested a wobbling 175mm VRP pulley.. Have to be tons of them out there.. I had a balance shop and machine shop that specializes in automotive pulley balancing check the wobble issue..

I have heard members being told that it is ok for a pulley to wobble at idle and that with RPM it will smooth out.. This is flat out BS and an optical illusion that is causing damage to your 48K motor.... If it wobbles, it is tearing main bearing apart and causing all kinds of harmonic balance damage. Our outer S/C ring on our crank pulley is pretty far out past center and any wobble is amplified from this extra leverage..

I included a picture of the VRP pulley for example, as it is in this style dsign that is causing wobble. Not sure how many MFG`s use this style and there are ways to make it work but the VRP did not display any.. At least the one i had checked (only 6 months old)..

First the pulley in the picture is made from a stock Mb pulley and that is a plus. (IMO).. Bolt on outer ring is also nice but here is where it all went wrong..

First, the pulley is not balanced (no balancing holes).. This is part of the issue .. Not sure if it was save money or just missed in the design.. Second, it is alsmost impossible to bolt an outer ring onto another ring with multiple holes and stay true.. It will always have some elipse to it , unless the parts are machined to inner lock and then bolt together.. This design failed to have that and thus wobbling pulley`s and stress on seals, bearings, crank and all internal rotating parts..

Check those pulley`s!

Brooke, are those alignment pins or did the button heads shear off?

That picture came off their site. Pic. is not of the one I tested.

Looks like pins but they are still the same as drilling holes.. You have tolerance issues and end up with elipse shape.. Some may be round/true but the odds do not favor a drilled and none balanced part..

Would have to agree, I passed up a few sales on pulleys due to wobbles. Thankfully the sellers were honest enough to state this in our communication-sure did save the hassle of any Paypal disputes. How much to balance out a wobbly pulley?

This is the beauty of remaining stock. So who makes the best pulley? I'm not talking power but build quality.

ASP are good.

my pulley is done the same way as stock but it is bigger.

they use the OEM inside pulley and bolt, but remove the outside pulley and get a bigger one. welded the same way as stock is. rubber and etc.

ni wobble @ all.

I 2nd the ASP pulley. I have zero wobble with my pulley and I'm very pleased with the gains. I agree 100% with Brooke on this one, a wobbling pulley is very bad and the result could be catastrophic if unlucky.

Mine has no wobble at all --- I got lucky --- Afterwards, I heard the Evosports are great because they never wobble -- maybe because they are built from the ground up -- not a stock pulley with a glued on ring.

If you're talking build quality and not necessarily power production (as the question was posed above) I'd have to agree 100% with this statement. I've had three crank pullies on my car - only the stock and Kleemann pullies show zero wobble from idle on up. From comments I've seen, I'd surmise Renntech to be in the same boat - although haven't tried their product personally.

Exotic Metal - good info above, thanks for posting.

Correct, I was only posting about wobble and not power gains.. Many people do not know or really have time to learn all the dynamics of our harmonic balancing S/C pulley.. I was not picking on one brand or another , just saying to CHECK your aftermarket pulley..

I have only used ASP pulley`s on my cars and SUV`s.. None have ever failed or wobbled and that is why I keep going back to them for all my vehicles`s pulley`s.. I am sure others have had simulair experiences with their favorite pulley.. Either way, just make sure they run true.. I hear that 8-10 thou. of run out is ok but that is still really tight..

Oh yeah, I have also been hearing that ASP has been making some huge custom S/C pulley sets for the 55 S/C engine.. Must be a bunch of sneaky MB members out there..lol I am thinking of going larger pretty soon too. Others may stay quiet but I will post my results, after I go larger..

What kind of tool would you use to detect wobble besides your eyes? lol Would a decent shop be able to do this?

BTW Thanks for the pulley Brooke!

Those sneaky guys........BUSTED

I've talked to Lee a couple times and I was actually entertaing the idea of testing out a bigger pulley and having them make it for me but I was out of time and most likely they werent going to have it ready for me by the Famoso event that past.

I really do wonder what sizes those sneaky MB owner acutally went with and the results they had. I look foward to your result's Brooke

Sal, LMAO!! Been hearing of some 185- 195 mm range so far.. I saw several (big mm) in person but names were not given to protect the guilty..

Anyone find any crooked pulley`s in thier recent inspection???

I'm checking my Kleemann this weekend, just in case.. I may actually go to a 180mm sized pulley if i don't get the results I am after from my current/forthcoming mods...
