ASP Idler pulley saved me big $$$$$.

As many of you have experienced , our S/C idler pulley`s blow out a lot! The larger S/C crank pulley, also speeds up the process, by spinning the stock idler a lot faster than stock.. This idler is held on by one long bolt, and must flex some under load..

If this pulley breaks, you are SOL.. You loose both belts and car will be un-able to drive.. At best, parts fall on the ground and do not sling through the hood of the car or cause other damage.. Most of all, this idler pulley is sold as a set by MB for close to 400.00 bucks!!

Signs of a bad idler are squeeking noise at start up and wobbling when you twist it with your hand..

I sent my stock pulley to ASP and they machined up a new heavy duty Idler pulley out of billet aluminum. They said bearings are now Z rated wich can handle higher RPM than the stock bearings.. I left mine clear coated silver but custom colored anodizing can also be done..

PIC 1 ASP idler pulley with stock bolt cap
PIC 2 Stock pulley and ASP pulley
PIC 3 Install pulley

BTW, this is a 10 minute install or Re/Re.. It is that easy!

Ooops, only $125.00 but sure price will drop if they are able to run volume and keep stock..

I have already had two sets fail on my car and it sucks! First at 37K and then I bought a used set that had 39K .. It failed after 9K on my car..

Kinda of strange looking at a Chip Foose looking hot rod pulley on my Benz..lol Maybe time for a WP, Idler and S/C pulley custom made and color anodized.

They have the program built off my stock pulley , so orders should follow thier normal lead times.. I heard a guy called , just paid 390 for a MB idler set and ordered the ASP idler today for back up.. So, I assume they will be running more soon..

I tested and mic-ed all the specs during instal and this is a very nice peice of work..

LOL, no.. ASP or ASP dealer I assume.. I was not going to pay 400 to MB, so i called ASP and asked.. Glad I did too.

I think I will have the S/C tensioner pulley made next, just to get better bearings and get rid of the ugly metal two peice pulley..Yuck! That Fugly thing is in my face every time the hood is opened..

+1 how do we order? Is a new bolt included or do we need to get this from benz?
All you need is the pulley.. Same MB bolt is fine to re-use.. I used a little blue lock tight but that was more compulsive than needed..

You know what has saved me even more mone? A good extended warranty. I had my idler pulley start squeaking and had it covered under warranty, along with thousands of dollars worth of other parts.

If you are concerned with the $275 price differences of an idler pulley, and don't have an extended warranty... wow, just wait until something really goes wrong. I don't know the exact figure, but my warranty cost around $4000 - and it's paid for itself like 2-3 times over. I want to be clear - I take care of my car better than 99% of the people on this forum. I haven't even hit 50k miles yet.

Let me be clear, I don't mean to scare everyone, no question I've had some bad luck, but at the same time bad luck is just that - luck - and any one of these cars can have it too. No one likes to talk about their cars when they are broken but let me tell you, I know a lot of E55 owners who've had to have a LOT of warranty work done even when they treat their cars well (although, still not as well as I do).

I think you mis-understood my post/ concern.. I don`t care about the 275.00 or even the 400.00 .. I paid 3600 for my warranty and my time is worth a lot more than a trip to the dealer (there back and there back) to let warranty put another POS pulley on my car (over 275.00). Also, they keep the car for a day or so, then see all my mods (MT/ET drags are a give away) and decide to go race all thier SL65 black series against it..lol.

So the ASP pulley saved me a lot more than the difference.. That is my whole point.. I take very good care of my car but also run it damn hard.. If the POS pulley fly`s through my hood and or radiator, then what will warranty say? Not going to chance that over a few hundred bucks..

I hear you on the warranty and you are right, some here get a good deal on a 55 but can not afford to keep up with repairs.. They can be brutal , with no warranty.. That is a whole other topic..

Fair enough exotic. I did misunderstand your post. I am concerned about people who are joining this community now with the mentality that an extended warranty is not needed but then wind up with repair bills that they cannot afford. It's really not a good ownership experience, so I just try to make it known that a good extended warranty is really crucial on these cars.

Yes, it is the double pulley set, like in my pic3.. The front pulley is the S/C idler pulley and the one that seems to fail.. The second pulley (closest to motor)accessory idler pulley can be bought most anywhere for around 10 bucks.. Doubt those fail very often. It is made of nylon or some type of plastic.

Included a better perspective angle.. Bright silver outer pulley, is the S/C idler..

Sorry for the OT comment, EM, but I wanted to mention - agree wholeheartedly with Marcus about having a reputable, comprehensive aftermarket warranty for any of these AMGs. What amazes me, however, is that the companies are even still willing to underwrite these automobiles - Marcus's experience ($4k premium with repairs already totalling 2-3x that amount with significant coverage remaining) appears quite common, from quite a few instances I'm aware of. Just an observation.

Your ASP idler pulley looks nice - I have an ASP crank pulley on my M111K and it's been both effective and reliable.

Good stuff

Hey Exotic _ metal 55. Would it be possible for ASP to install 2 ceramic bearings instead of a single steel ball bearing and make a longer Hi quality screw with a cool looking billet weather cover to match. The bearings are only $5.00 more apiece, retail. Remember screw is a screw , until you put a nut on it, then it becomes a bolt LOL Cheers _PTEngineering
