2011 M5 Specs Revealed....
I came upon this article from worldcarfans.com for those who may have not seen it yet,
"The 2011 BMW M5 saloon will have a 0-100 km/h time 0.3 seconds faster than the current model, according to Car Magazine. The car will receive a significant boost in power and torque, and a generous increase in efficiency.
Unfortunately, those who want a wagon variant will have to look elsewhere. No new BMW M5 Touring is planned for production at this time, according to the magazine.
Engineers at the German automaker achieved the faster time despite dumping the 5-liter V10-engine in favor of a 4.4-liter bi-turbo V8. Horsepower on the engine, already seen in the X5 M, bounces up to 578 hp, while torque is increased over the most recent M5 by 40% from 380 lft-lb to 531 ft-lb.
Even with better performance, the car will use an estimated 30% less fuel, while pumping out similarly reduced emissions, with final figures expected to be at a respectable 24 mpg. This was not only accomplished with weight management, but through the use of the company's Efficient Dynamics system. A kinetic energy recovery system (KERS), developed by the company's ex-F1 programme, may also make it to the final vhehicle.
If the 250 km/h (155 mph) speed limiter were removed, the car would top out around 303 km/h (188.3 mph). The 2011 BMW M5 should be introduced at the end of 2010, with market launch in the spring of 2011."

Sorry AMG, but its time to try out an M now!![drive](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/driving.gif)
Since the X5 M is running 21psi at full boost, I wonder how much room is left for aftermarket tuning?

If the exterior and interior and drastically changed (for the better), I may be willing to consider a M5, but I despise the current BMW lineup... Prior to purchasing my E55, I test drove an 07 760Li and an 08 M5 and I couldn't get past the dull interior, let alone the exterior... I guess it is all a matter of personal preference...

04 - 06 e55 Wagon - looking for
Too bad the M5 wagon is smaller than the AMG wagon - but then it wouldn't be the 'ultimate driving machine' at the larger size. Still, BMW wagons aren't available in the US anyway. Maybe a used X5 M is the way to go, but I hear the interior space is much smaller than what is expected in an X5 chassis ![nix](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/nixweiss.gif)
That said, the third row seat can't be ordered in the X5 M version.

Don't worry, that 6.2 motor in W212 isn't gonna last long, and then it's gonna be like the E39 M5 vs the W211 55 when it first came out and it'll take years until BMW can catch up once again
Buy damn, now we're knocking on 600HP's door... lol this is crazy!

I think this is where AMG will probably capitalize...build a powerful motor at low boost to allow for more tuning...At least I hope so.

If it looks anything like the rendering below I think the new M5 will look amazing. A platform with a lot of potential in both the looks and performance department. However, I am waiting at least a year or two to see if the new 4.4 TT is responsive to tuning, and what kind of power it can handle. I've read that these new ECU's are going to be much harder to crack.

I am sure the ECUs are going to be a bigger headache -- but remember its a bimmer and will have 3 times the amount of tuners.

After all the hype over the horsepower wars being over, this is just incredble news.
AMG finally has the handling issues ironed out and provided AMG matches the M in power on their TT's, this is truly gonna be epic!!!
Never forget Car and Driver already has the article written for the 2011 article.
"Strangely the AMG edged out on the M5 in the slalom, skid pad and clearly won in the 1/4 mile and 0-60 times, not to mention braking......we preferred the M ultimately though."

What I may buy is this new M5. I keep telling myself I won't as the current 5.0 is one of the greatest engines ever made but I drive past a BMW showroom most days so resisting the urge is going to be a battle and a half.

The bolded portion above is why Car Magazine is the worst of all the UK car mags. So the new one with a sizeable chunk more power than the V10 M5 has a top speed 17mph less (188 vs 205mph verfiried BMW figure) than the V10? I just don't buy it.

the specs are as expected.. based on the X6M and X5M..
the killer combo will be the DCT gear box.. since the X5/X6 have average auto gear boxes.
I would still choose a new 550i sport and tune it and save the $$ or even a E5xx (which ever engine they add TT) and call it a day.
1) I can't afford and 2) I won't be able to find a place to drive the car 8/10 to 9/10th of its capabilities.
Maybe if I double my income in a few years (highly unlikely)
My E is a average handling car and a beast on the freeway.. and I hardly use its power. I feel like a mall cop with a M-16.. I have way too much power for what I need.
I don't drive crazy and look for trouble.. and I usually respect other cars.

Lets say, freeway 60 or 57 or 5 is always traffic..... sometimes its even hard to drive 70MPH ! why would I need something more than my E55 ??
Thats why I drive more S320 than E55 (try to keep it lower mileage)
Freeway = Traffic, City = Cops

I have an X5M, and was already able to gain 47whp and 35 ft/lbs torque from just a few hours of messing around on the dyno with my tuner. We just recently reflashed the car with a new tune that made substantially more torque in the lower rev range and snaps your head back pretty hard now under full acceleration. This has all been achieved without even touching the intake or exhaust yet, needless to say this motor has a lot of potential. Matched up to the 7 speed dual clutch transmission that will be on the M5 and its sure to be a serious grocery getting beast from Germany.

I think having both cars, the upcoming E63 (5.5 TT) and the M5, being so closely matched in power and specs is so exciting, as it's going to make the 1/4 mile wars epic
578 hp out of 4.4L is very impressive
