Enough with the PS2's. What's second best at a greatly reduced price?
Don't get me wrong, the PS2's have always been one of my favorite aspects of the car. Silent as a whisper, tenacious grip, excellent tracking, awesome braking. But I'm having a hard time buying my fourth or fifth set at what, $1,152 from tire rack plus install, balance, etc etc, and you end up closer to $1400-$1500 for a tire that only lasts me 8-10K miles, maybe 12k if I'm really careful.
There must be a generally agreed upon runner up that presents significant cost savings at a 5-10% reduction in performance. Depending on how long it'll last, the savings would be even greater than the purchase price (e.g they last 20k miles).
Problem is I'm not willing to sacrifice TOO MUCH. Gotta be a super quiet tire with great grip. Anyone have any experience? Made the switch and wouldn't go back? Post your experience, I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Skeeter

for tires that I have tried I like the Nitto Invo . It was a all around good tire , but for even cheaper the the Hankook V12 got 2nd to the PS2 on a road and track tires test IIRC. I havent tried it but I will once my tires are worn out.

OK, this one is going to sound weird, but we went with Kumho's ultra high performance all-season. In Iowa, we didn't want a summer tire as the ends of summer get too cold and summer tires are a problem.
Really like them. Work well, reasonably quiet and very cheap.
Liked them enough that when I needed summer tires for my 996TT I went with Kuhmos again (not all season)

Another vote for the T1R. I have them and they have performed greatly in ALL areas including tread life.
I would never have considered Toyo tires in the past but owned several fully modded Dinan BMW's over the years and that was their "factory" tire fitment for quite a while and they were all great so when I need tires for the E55 and couldn't get a Yok Advan Neova in the correct size (loved those on my GT-3 and everything else I have tried them on), I gave the Toyo a shot not because of price but because it was my second choice. I haven't had any second thoughts at all.

IM running the invos and wanted to try the nt05 or what ever there next tire was,the invos are good but I just want a little more grip.
Im telling you the ps2 are worth it,kinda wished I just put up the extra 300 and went with them.
my next setup is going to be the widest ps2 I can run,I think a 285/35/18 will fit in the rear

I have been running T1Rs on my SL for the last two summer seasons and love them. I just can't figure out why the rears wear out twice as fast as the fronts. Come to think of it, my PS2s did the same thing.

His wife crazy
Where do you guys buy the Toyo's? Neither the rack or discount tire carry them.
EDIT: It appears that 245/40/18 is not available for the front.

I get mine direct through Toyo as they have been supporting me for years. There are other outlets selling them online as I've seen them before, but mostly I think it's brick and mortars that will have them.

Check this out. No toyo's in this test but a few tires beat the PS2's and for less money. The Hankooks in particular beat it almost everywhere and stay right with the PS2's in the wet and it has a higher treadwear rating and is almost half price. Seems almost dumb to get the michelins after seeing that. More performance, longer life and less cost? No brainer.

Just found this one too. I'm not knocking the toyo's because I've never tried them but they didn't fare to well here. I didn't look into it cuz I gotta run but I don't think I personally would go that direction.

I didn't see any mention of tempature unless it was just thrown in there in a review of a tire that I didn't read. I just did another quick search and eurotuner wasn't huge on the proxes either. Again, I'm just relaying what I'm reading as I've never had these.
Here is another test http://www.eurotuner.com/techarticle...ide/index.html
1.76 is a great 60' time. I hope for something similar to that this spring with NT05 which I'm 90% sure I'm going with. Actually I hope for a low 1.8. Anything in the 1.7 range would be a bonus. I got a 1.943 with general UHP exclaims after a small burnout. I have no doubt that the NT05's will help. However, half of the equation is the indian, not the arrow.

There are T1R threads on here that cover this that a good search should uncover.
I would go look in the garage but I am stuck in bed after hernia surgery.

You can buy T1Rs from 1010tires.com.
I have T1Rs on my E63 which have been great. Awesome, and I mean awesome wet grip. Absolutely amazing how well they handle the wet. In the snow, not so good, but they arent made for that. Tons and tons of grip in the dry, sometimes it takes more power than it should to spin the back end out. They handle good in the cold as well. Not as good as they do in the warm weather, but they do okay.
PS2s on the other hand I am not so fond of. I have them on my CTSV and its cold out right now and they suck. I cant judge them in the cold weather but all I can say is that I am not impressed with the cold weather performance. I know I am going to get flamed because they are for the summer, but so are the Toyos and they work fine in the cold.
