Thumbs up Go 185mm or go home!

Ok, it was a catchy title

First, wanted to thank whomever ordered the first custom 185mm pulley from ASP last Novemeber.. They had to run a few extra outer rings for that custom job. I was able to score a couple custom 185`s for me and few friends, the day before inventory taxes were due...Sweet! Thanks, whoever you are..

My first DIY pulley installed 1.5 years ago, really sucked doing on my back.. I just kept telling myself, it is only one bolt, it is only one bolt! Then Jacked the car up and got after it.. 1 hour and 18 minutes later,, I was done! Hitting that 250 inch lbs of torque by myself was a little tough though..Make sure you have large enough guns , before attemting alone..hehe

Pic is a little dark but the nice thing about this 185mm sized pulley, is that we can use the 525 gates belt As you can see on the left of the S/C pulley, now have more belt wrap. Very close to stock wrap again..

Drivability has improved for me! SC engadgement, is very quick and smooth. Part throttle is really strong now, as the S/C seems boosted up a lot more at part throttle. Top end is pulling much harder. The nose of car stays lifted all the way through gear shifts now.. Again, this is through stock manifolds! My IATS at 53 deg ambien,t only hit 115 deg. from a 30-120 mph run.. Can not tell any IAT heat change but sure it makes some more heat.. Either way, my cooling keeps up with it well.

I was also suprised to find that I had a 178mm pulley on and that my 180mm was not re-installed on my motor work done last summer. So, about 7mm increase for me. Early test show about 15.6lbs of boost @ 4600 rpm in second gear but my test were done with that damn Good year gator back.. It was slipping like crazy! Belt dust all over my new ASP idler pulley I now have the 525 gates and the car is pulling much harder than with the gatorback.. I will re-check boost in second and third soon..

Wanted to thank Jerry @ Eurocharged for adding some fuel up front, until I can finish my test, exhaust and re-dyno tune..

Our track has been rained out every week now or to cold but have been trying to go for weeks now.. Will keep trying..

Cool So you think the Gates belt is better than the Goodyear Gatorback?

i've actually used both. gatorback and gates hd greenback and for whatever reason the gates shredded. gates is definetly a tougher belt, i went back to the gatorback i had. i will get a new gates before track/street season '10 starts

I thought long and hard about it but it came down to a % over stock number that I was comfortable with.. 20% or less.. Also could not find any hard facts to S/C speed limits, so again staying with the 20% rule.. Last, these rings were made and ready to be scooped up.. I know that ASP made one 190mm but no extra rings were made on that custom pulley.. It possible, that I may still have room for one more friend..

blackbenzz Cool So you think the Gates belt is better than the Goodyear Gatorback?
No doubt in my mind. Gator has a good story of flex = better grip but I will take more surface area anyday.. Gates V groove has at least 40% more surface area, as gator cuts all the space out to allow more flex.. I see the gator slip on my data log boost and on several cars on the dyno now. Gates is the one for me!!!

pm me if you have another 185 and i'll buy it. i talked to ASP before about making me a 185 or 190. they were backed up and the wait was kinda long so that keeps falling thru the cracks.

cool info...

but I have a feeling even upgraded H/E will have a hard time keeping IAT's on check with that size of pulley.

Specially in the summer months.

i'd def say you want to have a larger tank with more volume to keep IATs under control with 185

in UAE 185mm is old :P and tested for mor than a year. since 4 months, guys are instaslling 195 and driving them hard and no problems are showing except ( thier beating other cars ).

lool

this month some guys will install 205mm with injectors in the intake for testing incease their is a shortage of fuel while it is on the dyno during tuning.

will update u guys soon.

Damn, 205mm in desert heat? Do you guys have a track around there? Any numbers from these cars? A second set of injectors in intake huh. Why not just increase injector size?

we dont drive them in the summer during the day ( only @ night )

in winter we keck them hard. coz temp in the day do reach 30C

reasons for using second set of injector:

- it may not need more fuel.
- hard to find bigger injectors fit the 55k motor.

we dont have tracks here, so most of the time it is a fast street race with others or just a drag race.

so it is a one shot race. IAT wont be a problem unless u r in a track and u need to keep the car cooled for a long hard time driving.

or 2 - 3 runs that there is couple of minutes between them that makes the car cool a bit.

I dont see why you would put second set of injectors if the car doesn't need more fuel. Wouldn't you check this before adding another set of injectors?

SLR injectors drop in. And if thats not big enough I think we can find an aftermarket company.

With pulleys that big, I think heat poses an issue on even a single pull but I dont know without IAT logs.

Its cool to see you guys pushing the limits, just wish there was more info

It is 70 degrees here today and been beating on the car hard today.. Still no heat issues and I do not have a trunk tank.. I hit 122 IAT`s peak today so far.. Have ET streets on and been out prowling the streets..

Damn Brooke, your IAT's look awesome for having a 185mm pulley. What kind of runs have you done today? Any long runs up to 130-140???

Very nice, but do you or anyone else have any dyno numbers to back up any improvements? Surely there will be a point of diminishing returns due to the efficiency of the blower and am curious at what point this is reached with the factory blower. I know a few are running 190s as well, but again, would like to see results.

Nope, only 120mph.. If I had your mph, then I would surely test it up to 140! Really, you will have a hard time seeing IAT`s increase much..

I sure like the way the car drives now, S/C activation and the pull!

No doubt there is a S/C speed max limit for effeciant power but the 185 is not it.. IMO.. Maybe the 205mm is to big..lol Batter up for USA 205mm !

You could put propeller blades on it and use it to as added thrust and to spin the supercharger...

70F is nice compared to last week. no? Weather has been crazy up there.

I remember the days when 180mm was way too big.. now 185 will probably end up being the norm.

I do like the engagement is quicker.. something that I enjoy from my C32 vs my E55.

Probably a good time to find my stock pulley and start saving to send to ASP.

See, when people ask how the new 185mm pulley feels like, I can just point to the sticker.
