Smile Newb here, about to buy first Benz, several ?'s

Sup guys, Im a subaru sti owner and am about to get either a e63 or e55, so I have several newb questions. Hopefully I wont get bashed for picking the wrong thread or anything, but I couldnt find a newbie section. Anyways, Ive read up quite a bit about the two models, Im interested in the 2003-2006 e55 or the 2006-2009 e63...

First of all, I want all the goodies that are optional/extra on these cars (pano, parktronic...), so I wanted to ask which year models, did or didnt have these options. In addition I made a list of several questions that I thought Id ask.

1. What are the differences between the 03-06 e55's? I believe the earlier ones didnt have some options that the later ones did...
2. What are some common problems with these cars (headgasket problems, exhaust leaks, electronic problems...)? and at what mileage do these problems typically occur?
3. Are the bodies of the e55 and e63 the same? (length, width, height...)
4. I saw a button, below the shifter, that had an arrow pointing down in the center of the car, does this adjust ride height for a sportier feel?
5. Might sound like a dumb question, I know the e55 has little buttons to shift on the back of the steering wheel, but is there anyway to replace the steering wheel from a e63 into a e55? The e63 paddles would give the car some bonus points

Please feel free to add anything that can help me make a decision. Any input you guys could give me would be great!

Welcome, but do a search so we dont have to dicuss these issues again and again. There is plenty of info if you look! These have all been dicussed many times.

2003-2006 was the E55. supercharged 5.4L 2007-2009 was the E63 6.2 liter all motor.

the 6.2 i've read is faster, but i would probably say the e55 has more tuning potential.

1. can't help you here. but i can tell you the diff between the 03-06e55 and the 07-09e63.... there was a major facelift, headlights, front bumper, rear bumper, tail lights to full LED, steering wheel, interior is slightly different. the e63 just looks a bit better because of the facelift.
2. I have yet to have a problem with my car, i really recommend the extended 100k/2year warranty on the CPO i extended mine to 100k/4 year warranty which is expensive.
3. yes, bodies dimensions, but like i said, they facelifted the 07-09
4. yes, there are 2 buttons, one is to raise the car. the other button in the center, is to lower the car, from normal, to dc sport 1 which is lower, and the most aggressive is dc sport 2.
5. why? i have the e63, and the paddle shifters are fun...... i never tried the buttons. but if you get a 55 try to see if you can get the paddles instead.

cool, thanks for the input to this point... I have found some REALLY long threads very similar to this... seems like some ppl here fight the e63 against the e55 like some sti owners do against evo's LOL...

1 last ?... As you mentioned the e63 got a facelift (bumper, lights...), what are some of the more major and visible exterior parts that are different between the 2 cars?
Also, Ive read that the paddles from a e63 can be installed in the e55, i assume the entire steering wheel has to be replaced for this, other than dealing with the airbag, how difficult/pricey is this to do?

The paddle shift thing is simplier than you think. You can just buy the paddles and retrofit them in the E55. As far as the E55 and E63 go, test them both and go with the one you like. I personally test drove the E63 first, CLS55 second, E55 last, and ended up bought the E55. I used to own three Evos before my E55, no regret at all. Oh yeah, I also had a '04 STI before the Evos too. Good luck.

Whatever u get make sure u get a dealer warranty. . I prefer the 63 since it has a more appealing look to it than the older model 55 but u can always swap those parts out if needed for a face lift .

And if u are looking for a affordable 100hp upgrade go with the 55 . Or u can always pay up the Wazoo for some extra hp on the 63 - Ouch it still hurts lol

im def leaning towards the e55 after spending the last 2 hours on here lol... but ive been searching mainly 05's and 06's and it seems that i cant find any that have EVERYTHING... meaning one may have keyless start, but not cooling seats or pano roof and vice versa... did they ever have make it with everything included or am i just unlucky finding an e55 with everything???

The 55 has a s/c so you know what that means. If you want to mod and go faster for cheap, then do the 55. The 63 is more civilized for every day driving. So it depends on what you want out of a car.

I got a 63 because I wanted a new car and a comfort DD. I already have a weekend car for the giggles.

Sounds to me you'd be happier with the 55.

If you came from a tuner car, go with the e55. like 220S said, i got my 63 because its more "civilized" for daily driving, i use my 63 as a daily driver, and its hurting my $$$$ the e55 is also gonna hurt too, especially if you mod it up like i know you will.

i drive my car everyday and it runs smooth as silk no problems at all .. my car hasn't been in dealership in 2 yrs all i do is maintain the car without any problems ... modding the car makes it run so much better than stock . when my car was stock it had little issues but since its been completely modded nothing has failed on me .. if u drive my car normal u wouldnt know whats there only its alittle louder . my wife who hates the car and never drove it before until few weeks ago was so scared of the power i told her drive it normal and its fine . she gets back and was in aww about how easy it was to drive now she only likes it if she drives it lol

o, well there you go then. i really like the styling on the e63's.

and by the way, the e55's are pretty much faster with a few bolt on's.

but remember the 63 motor was the first motor to be completely designed by AMG themselves no help from MB. quick FYI

def agree that the e63 styling is better, i also figure that the 5-10k price difference just isnt worth it IMO, 469hp is enuff for me :-D

you will be happy to know that the 55's are under rated and produce just as much hp as a 63 and a boatload more torque .
