Is "almost" WOT faster then all out pedal to the metal?

This has been bugging me for the past 6 years of E Class ownership. The gas pedal has a little button behind it.

1. WHAT IS IT?
2. When I mash the gas, button depressed, the car roars and launches. When I mash the gas and NOT go all the way, NOT PRESS THE BUTTON BEHIND THE PEDAL, the car launches but doesn't create the havoc with the button pressed. Because its smoother, it almost feels like the car is faster when you mash the pedal but not so far to depress the button. Whats your deal?

Please someone who is already enlightened, enlighten me. All my E's had this little dingleberry, the 320, 500, and now the 55. Does the 63 have one?

a quarter mile at a time
AFAIK, all modern MB's have it. It's the kickdown button. When the button is depressed, it tells the ECU to drop to the lowest possible gear for that speed, and go WOT.

Now, this may not be ideal in a car like a E55 or E63 where the lowest possible gear and WOT may mean wheelspin.

No the sprint booster is placed inline with the throttle wiring harness pin connection under the dash.

You do have to remove the gas pedal to get to it though.

AFAIK the 2010's don't have the little kickdown button anymore. It might still be there on some models but most don't have it.

It's the kickdown button for the transmission. However, you will be at 100% throttle if the button is presed or if the gas pedal is pressed against the button but does not actuate the button. Probably the reason for more drama with the button pressed is because people tend to push the gas pedal down faster when they are slamming it to the floor, rather than slowly bringing it right up to the kickdown button.

Go out on the interstate, cruise at 65, and mash the gas to the floor. The car will shift into 2nd and take off. Now do the same thing but instead of slamming the gas down, press it quickly so it's right up against the button. The car will shift into 3rd this time, but it'll still be at WOT.

Nice ok I'm picking up what you're putting down. I did notice that when you depress the button on wot there is almost a millisecond delay before the launch. Almost like the quiet before the storm.
This would also explain why the car feels faster without the button pressed.

A millisecond is all it takes to get the hamsters up to speed.

But seriously, it's like the engine saying "Are you sure that is what you want?" Then, BAM!!

Very informative, I had no idea about this button. Just never looked that closely honestly.

I love this forum.
