A word on black wheels - Thoughts?

I think one of the best color combos our there for MB's are a dark grey car and black wheels. In fact my dream ride is an S65, modded of course, in slate grey with black 21's. Also I think an all white car with black wheels looks great as well.

Be that I cannot yet afford this, what are your thougths about putting black 19" wheels on my gold E55? I guess I'm asking would a gold car with black wheels look silly?

Need to replace my tires soon and considering a wheel upgrade along with it, so it's got me thinking.

Thanks for your advice.

Alex

Just me, apparently on this, and...

I"m probably older than most of you guys. But to me, I just don't get it. There are very, very few cars that call pull off a look that is supposed to be that stark, or menacing, or whatever it is. An E, or most any other sedan, is not one of them. Or most any Benz for that matter. And that doesn't mean I don't like em. I simply cannot understand the logic of going to that much trouble to pick out, mount, tweak, and clean wheels that you have to sturggle to see the spokes. Maybe it's because I sold so many color matched wheels back ion the 80's. To me, there is nothing better than a perfectly set up wheel package in a bright silver that is super clean from the face all the way to the back.
OK, flame suit on. Go ahead.

Allen, I used to be the same way. My older brother told me to get black wheels back in the day but I thought, If I am going to fork over a lot of money for wheels, I would like to be able to see them. However, the black wheel fad is now my favorite. I often think it would be nice to go a different route since everybody and their dog does black wheels nowadays, but I truly think that black looks good on 99% of vehicles. No matter how many people have it, I would still do it if I ever get wheels because in my opinion, that is what would look best to me. The only time I don't like black wheels is when they are undersized with a polished lip. I can totally see where you are coming from though. No flaming from me.

No flame here either...it is just a matter of preference...I can respect that. As far as the OP, if you go gold w/black rims add gold calipers w/black AMG lettering...

Personally, I haven't seen any gold E55's so I can't really visualize it...

IMHO black wheels have no place on a "gold" E. But I'm also part of the crowd that believes black wheels only belong on black (or at least very dark color) cars. IMHO nothing looks better on the classy E than silver or a very light gunmetal (a la stock e63 wheels).

Not at all trying to flame either but it's impossible for me to fathom a gold painted car in general. If it were me I would paint the car before I would buy a set of wheels and tires. That's just me. If you're set on keeping it gold then I truly think black would look decent.

Any pics of your ride??

Black or Titanium Grey with no chrome lip. That is your best bet.

Dark wheels make any car look more aggressive.

Brake dust blend in with black wheel so you don't need to clean it to0 often.

Black wheel look good with any car color specially Red & black.

personally i say No to both of them, I don't like black wheels on white cars and think black wheels on gold won't do either. Chrome on Gold is not good either, I would say to go with silver HRE's.

Black wheels on a white car can look good, but white wheels, with a polished lip on a white car look the best IMO!

All,

Great feedback and no flaming from me I promise. I can't seem to attach a photo for some reason but it's basically the "standard" light gold color of the 2004 E55.

Thanks.

Alex

My god that looks menacing. Love it!

So I think I won't go with Black wheel on my gold car, as Gold is a "softer" almost feminine color it might just look a bit odd.

When I get my slate grey S65 though, Black 21's (so +1) oh yeah, they're going on. As will my plate "GONEIN3" as in 0-60 MPH in the 3 second range. (I'll be modding the S65 of course to make this truthful).

Thanks everyone!

Alex

Typically I like black wheels only on a darker car and lighter/brighter wheels on lighter cars. To me gold (pewter may be a different story) wouldn't look right with black wheels...kind of the reverse of the '80s trend of gold wheel centers on black cars (yes, did that, ugh).

Hey to each their own - AMGfan 's car set the standard for blacking out everything back in the day

As for wheels I am still partial to Vossen's - American Made - Forged - strong as hell especially in CA its needed

I am anxious to see what you get - at the end of the day its your car and do with it what you like - only person who has to like it is you!!!!
