I once saw a custom made intake made out of aluminum tubbing with twin cone filters at the end. looked and sounded cool as ****, do not know what the power difference was but it was neat.

I think you are referring to "2Precise" CLK setup

IAT Info
On the way home the I logged some IAT info, freeway speeds of 65 it showed about 10 degrees above outside air (iat 78-80 @ 67 outside) I made a few pulls to 120 mph and would climb to 125 and would return to low 80's in under 20 seconds. This is pretty much what the stock box would read.

Or possibly kjlindgr's E55:

My .02 You mentioned you removed the hood insulation. I would also remove the hood vent cover, and pull off the weatherstrip on the back side of the engine compartment. Anything to increase airflow across the top of the motor should help.
Slightly off topic, what did you put down with the H2O injection?

I lost about 15 hp and gained around 8 ftTq. Its just too rich in the upper rpm's to see soild gains. pretty sure with tuning i will gain with it. Intrestting though is that I did back to back pulls with no cool down and saw within 2 hp diffrence in pulls.

Yes thats it! I believe someone by the name of ganstabenz had this same setup. You can see it from his avatar but is no longer an MB owner. Any ideas about power of this setup and who wants to make it for me?

Very cool intake sneaky! It actually looks fairly OEM with the black tubing. Oh, and I was one of the witnesses who was shocked at the 44 whp gain from removing the airbox. Still seems pretty crazy, but the runs were done back to back in front of everyone to see.

Here is a pic of the one on my car. The front cover still snaps in too. Everything is designed with airflow in mind.

Looking good Nick! I can't wait to meet up with ya and run our cars. I guarantee you we are going to have a blast, the way it should be. Maybe I'll try talking with Sac and see if we could get an 8 hour TnT day when you visit.

I've been using those Amsoil dry filters for a couple years now and have to say they are some of the best I've every seen/used. Cool how the factory intake snorkle fits into the filters cone opening in front

44whp gain !! We must be able to reclaim some of that with a good intake system -- So, someone needs to do some dyno time. I am a bit skeptical of that much gain -- also, skeptical of the 22hp gains those airboxes are claiming.

let me ask the obvioius! thats a straight thru filter correct? so the only air being filtered is in the engine compartment. the outside air coming thru the ductwork is wide open to the s/c allowing debris leaves and everything else to be sucked into the s/c intake. not a good idea!

Where did you get Amsoil dry air filters from? You have a part number for 03-06 E55?

^ If you check the first pic in post #38 you can catch a glimpse of the inverted cone filter in the center/middle.
