Installing Supersprint headers and need opinions on PLM heat exchanger and pump

Just installed 180 ASP pulley. Installing Supersprint LT headers tomorrow. I will be running 3 inch from the headers all the way back to the stock mufflers. I am hoping by doing this I will get a nice sound but avoid droning at high speeds. I will remove all 4 cats, and resonator running an x-pipe. If the o2 sensors are installed I should pass emissions right? Just curious of some E55 user experience. Will these LT headers help with Heat Soak. I am removing all the insulation under the hood and seals to help engine breathe better. It will be a couple weeks before I have the time to install the PLM heat exchanger and pump. I have run my car a few times hard and I get heat soak and SC shut down temporarily. Just curious on opinions of heat release with LT headers, and other ways to keep the SC running cooler. Also anyone have experience with PLM cooling kit and will it make the difference?

you will get a check engine light !!!! removing the front pair of cats will give you a light --- but others have found a way to get rid of the light -- you will need to inquire about that -- I will need it too --

Well - I will check with you tomorrow and see how everything is going -- it should help your heating alot -- then you can decide about the other cooling mods ---

You should get a new tune - SOoN -- maybe after you finish your TB .. probably need to dyno tune it with all the mods you have.

No, you will fail the emissions test if you have no cats because they clean the exhaust gasses as it passes through them.

If you get heat soak and the SC temporarily shuts down then you need to replace your IC pump.

You should see a huge increase in power with those mods. Good luck!

To help dissipate heat, I would not run an x-pipe. I just had a full exhaust built along with Headers installed and no x-pipe, could not be happier with the sound, plus my wife didn't ***** about the car being loud. No droning, quiet at idle, and beast at WOT. You will need to have the car retuned and at that time the tuner should be able to remove the CEL thrown because of no cats.

The requirement for cats is on the Federal level, so I would think every state inspector would do a visual inspection to keep out of jail...lol.
The fines for shops who remove cats can be VERY steep. Rule is if it come into the shop with cats, it must leave with cats. Of course I am sure most shops make you sign a waiver that the vehicle is used strictly "off-road"....
Honestly given the strict federal mandates, the pollution factor and the fact that high flow race cats have been proven to very minimally affect flow, not sure why so many people run without them.
Good luck with your project!

4 cats can be removed i am in the process of removing all upper cats as i have the rear ones already removed. It is a federal law to have the cats in place but here in Illinios(not sure how it is in other states) i have not had any emissions test stations check my vehicle "visually" As far as deleting the cell code that the ecu picks up from the the cats not being there i belive there are spacers that are put between the o2 sensor for them to read less carbon coming out of the exhaust to simulate that there are still cats in place. Also the shop who is doing my headers said there is some other type of sensor or connector not exactly sure what it is as he breifly explained it to me. But there are ways to get around not having any cats on our cars. Also if this helps my cousins 04 S4 is catless and he passed emissons with out any issues. Only thing at least in Illinois that the Emissions stations check for is Check Engine lights. Hope that helps and good luck with the project.

SS headers installed and about to pull out. I am not too worried about emmisions. I have a way around passing smog if I have to . Has anyone figured out what to do with the secondary O2 sensors? They are too short. I have searched and none of these forums have anything about 02 sensors on SS LT headers. They don't reach, so I am going to remove them and I guess lengthen the wiring. Does anyone know of just removing them all together and recalibrating the ECU so it doesn't throw a check engine light? Their are no physical inspections for smog, they just plug and play make sure there is no check engine light.

Thanks for all your responses.

update me on how the car runs and your heat issues -- my car is running better after i found the vacuum leak --- so, it should be a little faster but going to be slower than your car

Yeah definately will, they look sick. You can see them from the side of the car. I think it will make a huge difference on heat soak. I am not putting the bottom shield on where the LT headers pokeout. I am wondering as well if removing the front shield will make more air flow to the engine compartment. I know those shields are there for high speed runs, but it never rains in Vegas. If it gets wet who cares.

Good call Adam, on removing all the insulation under the hood, along with the black seals. I could really hear the blower wind up. I think it really helps for cooling. It sounds like a jet now!

Well it runs like an old school muscle car in a silk dress. You can really here it now. Unfortunately, after about a couple of hard runs the SC gets hot and shuts down. So I am definately going to have to move quick on the DLM heat exchanger pump. Especially before the Vegas heat hits.
