HELP: Wobbling Issue... Any Ideas?
Hello All!
(Disclaimer: I know this is e55/63 forum, but it seems to be much more active than the cls55/63)
I have been having a "wobbling" issue for the last 6 - 8 months. As my CLS55 is my weekender, this has not been a top priority to me, but it is getting a little old... any help would be greatly appreciated...
Here's the situation:
When I am traveling at high speeds... 100+ mph (on closed roads of course) I have severe speed wobbles. These wobbles are very present when I am WOT. If i ease the gas to high speeds, the car feels fairly stable. But, As mentioned, at WOT, it's as if I take the steering wheel and twist to the right and left to get a dipping motion back and forth (like rocking the boat feeling). I don't really feel anything through the steering wheel... it is more as if it stems from the wheels and/or suspension...
When I am traveling at low speeds... 25 - 55mph... the same wobbling occurs when I drive over a sewage man-hole or bumps in the road. The car feels like it "skips" to the right and left....
I have brought the vehicle into the dealership, and they continue to claim it is due to "bent rims." I am running stock 06 CLS55 AMG rims. I cannot recall hitting any curbs, and when I had the tires balanced, the tire shop did not mention any warping or dings/dents/issues.
My question is... could this possibly be due to unbalanced tires? worn out bearings? bad suspension sensors?
any feedback would be helpful, as I am going to bring the car back in to the dealer and would like to have some ammo or suggestions as to what I feel they should look for.

a Rivera...via a Custom 24, Strat and Les Paul
if it was wheels and tires, wouldn't it consistently wobble, not just over bumps or WOT

Interesting.......
I'm very interested in this as well cos my brother's CLS55 did the exact thing last i drove it. I was wondering if stems from the differential cos it feels as though the power is being tossed between the rear wheels at WOT causing the alternating pull ?

Control arm bushings!
Jack up that front end up and see if you can induce some play in the wheels, or have another person steer lock-to-lock a few times while you look things over.

wheels ..
I have those exact wheels.. they were bent when I bought them..
put new tires and took it a hunter 9700 machine.. they did they best they could.. but it never went away
i took them off.. and bought new tires and had the wheels fixed.. and still the vibration is there..
i took it back and the sent them to another place.. they removed the slow speed vibration, but 65 to 70.. its there.. They charged me $125 per wheel to fix.
I have spend like $2500 in wheels and tires and fixing these wheels.. and vibration is still there.
they look great.. but its very annoying.
btw: for test purposes, I placed m stock wheels with crappy tires and it was solid but noisy due to the severe tire wear.
I'm not sure if I'm going to keep the wheels at this point.. the hankook tires are brand new.
if you have time.. go on youtube and search bent wheel repair.. and there is a company that really knows what they are doing.

If this helps...........vibrations I have exsperienced over 100mph due to...
1. Rear wheels not balanced properly
2. rear propshaft coupling worn (bad vibration on throttle, minimal when off throttle)
3. worn torque convertor (but it does not sound like thats the problem you have)

Only marginally related but Ill say it anyway - I picked up a vibration under braking. Changed rear discs and it seemed to go away - then it came back - then it went away ... driving me nuts. Now, most recently, its gone.
Anyhow I digress...
On your issue ... it really could be soo many things ... work from the tarmac backwards.
Rubber
wheels
wheel bearings
control arms
bushings
diff bearings / mounts
prop bearings & mounts
tranny mounts
motor mounts
airmatic bags, mounts & control units
