Testing for NOS residue
my friend and I were debating about this. Can you test an engine for using NOS? If so, how long is NOS detectable?
I heard that normal NOS has sulfur and its the element that can be found in a NOS equipped car...
I also heard that medical stuff -- laughing gas does not have sulfur and leaves nothing behind after combustion..
please fill me in on this facts? or myths?

medical grade is clean and very hard to test for. best bet is to work on knowing the owner and looking around his shop and talking to his friends or shops that have worked on the car. GL

Actually, any substance that comes into contact with a pharmaceuticall product MUST be identity tested. That means that any gas used must first be identity tested (by U.S.P. standards) before it can be used.
Testing for nitrogen has long been a battle for that reason. They can rule many things out that typically contaminate but it is hard to show you have N2.

I also heard that medical stuff -- laughing gas does not have sulfur and leaves nothing behind after combustion.. Again correct.

By the way, I quit using NOS back in 1985 because NO one would fill my bottle. They all thought I would use it for medicinal purposes
Hence now they add SOx compounds to prevent anyone for using it for fun

People still use it for fun, even with the sulfur in it!
Please keep in mind that ALL internal combustion engines generate SOx compounds from the combustion process. With this in mind, it would be HIGHLY doubtful that anyone could contribute SOx compounds to NOS usage.

You can do a swab test on the inside of the tailpipes to determine if car has run nitorus through its engine. Nitrous splits into nitrogen and oxygen in the combustion chamber, the way I understand it is that this will leave higher levels of trace nitrogen on the inside of the tailpipes that should otherwise not be present. I am not sure where to get these swabs and what other chemical(s) are needed for the test, but I have seen it done and I have seen it pop positive. The person to ask is Blackbenzz (Ahmad), I think he is a chemist, I assume he can give us the exact answer on this question.

some flaw in your logic. Nitrogen is in the air your motor breathes, its 70 % of the mixture so this will not give you an answer. as other have mentioned , standard NOS is tainted and you can look for trace elements. otherwise its clean and will be hard to prove.
