Question: Underdrive Pulleys

One of the things on my list is 180mm Pulley upgrade. The kits come with underdrive pulleys for Water Pump, Alt, and Power Steering. Are all of these nessesary?

I do not see anyone that sells JUST the underdrive pullys, and do not know which are *really* required. A lot of used 180mm pulleys come up on the boards, and I am just wondering what else (besides tune and cooling) would be required to intstall, and where to get them.

Thanks!!

The kits come with a water pump pulley as the larger crank pulley will hit the stock WP pulley, is all.
A new crank bolt, belt, WP pulley, and crank pulley is all you need. Optional though recommended-a quality tune.

If you are looking to purchase a used unit, ensure that it is a quality unit that is true and straight. There are many that have wobbles and that is not what you want on the end of the crankshaft that drives an incredibly expensive motor. No such thing as a little wobble, either it does or does not. Sort of like being a little pregnant.

EVOSport may be able to help with underdrive pulleys for the water pump and others, if you like...

OK, now another question... In other circles, the Pulley swap is done on the Super Charger (only), not on the Crank. I read one post on here where someone had a smaller SC pulley. I am curious why this is not the standard. Maybe you just cant get the drive differencial with only the SC; meaning to get the same gains, the pulley would disappear. Are there options for a dual pulley set up, and are there any advantages?

My guess is that the smaller waterpump pulley is a stock pulley on another model. I seached parts, and it looks like a lot of MB's have the same basic design, with 4 bolts. I would guess the waterpump is interchangable on a lot of models (and even if not) - have the same bolt pattern. So the trick would be to determine what the stock application is that provides same bolt patten and width - but smaller in diameter. That would allow people to used the stock (Model XXX) and the larger crank pulley at a bit of a discount. If anyone could confirm, that would be great!

Because going with a smaller pulley just compounds belt slipping issues. When my GS400 was supercharged I went with a custom SC small pulley and all I did was shred the belt once a week.
