I'm sure you all are right. The shifting isn't as fast as I may think. I guess for me personally it's not big deal because it's a hell of a lot faster then the manuals I'm used to driving. Idk I just don't have a problem with it in real world driving and this is coming from a big manual transmission lover.

Now the PDK on the new Cayman and I assume 911's etc have quick shifting but have you seen or used the buttons? Now that is some funky stuff right there. Not intuitive at all!

For those that have the 7sp tranny, do you typically use the paddles or just let the car shift? When downshifting with the paddles does it rev match or just downshift?

I use the paddles about 75% of the time I'm in M, which is about 90% of the time. It is easier when you're driving and don't have to reach down. Driving down twisties is another story since your hands aren't always by the correct paddle, but the stick actually shifts faster than the paddles. NO rev matching downshifts, which is the other thing I forgot that annoys the crap out of me. If you're in 7th it's take FOREVER to get down to 4th. It's not too bad if you're driving hard and in the right gear and just need to shift down one. It felt good on the track, but I only shifted 2-3-4 the whole lap. Hit about 6700rpm in 4th at the top of the straight. The gearing for that track was great...

The CLK BS and C63 which have the same tranny, DO have rev matching downshifting programmed in to their TCU/ECU software

It actually didn't roll back. All you had to do was hold the downshift paddle before you released the brakes, which raised the throttle and engaged the clutch. I know my cars like my wife............inside out

I know this is a little off topic... but on the E55's where do you set the transmission setting? C, S, M? Where on the car do you do that...

Is it like one button that you push once for S and once more for M or how does it work? I haven't been able to find it in any of the cars i test drive...?

Yes, it is right above the P. Each time you push the button, the car switches the tranny mode from M (for manual mode), S (for sport mode), and C (for comfort mode). Each time you switch modes, the display in the instrument cluster will show you what mode you're in (it is located on the right of the miles counter).

Thanks! It's a great place to live and pretty convenient to go up to LA or down to OC. The only drawback is we live on top of each other. I have pretty cool neighbors, but when I go to the track at 5 AM in my BS, which has a modified exhaust that sounds like an explosion on start up, they are not that happy. I keep the garage door now closed when I start it............just have to make sure my windows are rolled up, otherwise my ears are ringing for a while
