Grille painting question...

I'm debating on getting a black 3 fin grille...or just blacking out my stock grille.

For those of you that have blacked out your grille, what paint did you use? Flat black? Semi?

Since I don't have an flat black on the car at all...I'm thinking a semi or high gloss might actually be better.

Just ordered a diffuser, front lip, and tail spoiler yesterday as well.

Next stop, 19"'s and new rubber.

from what i have seen in the past painted grills look good, but be prepared to paint it every 6 months becasue you will get rock chips.

Yep - I've already thought about that. I'd blacked out a grille on an S70 T-5 I had a long time ago...with several coats on it, it was rare that a chip went down to the chrome.

I've never used Plastidip.

I did just finish murdering my V-Rod (which turned out great) by myself...

...so I'm not scared of painting myself.

novae500 - did they use a flat black prior to the clear or semi or high gloss? Looks great.

I used semi flat black and sanded down the chrome until it was almost all off, i then used some primer and sprayed it semi flat black and it came out great. it kinda matches the mesh in the front bumper, and you will have to respray it every couple of months but most people think i had it done rather than myself.

I did about 10 coats of Krylon Fusion flat and have had no chips. With the Krylon I didn't have to sand or prime.

You could paint it then wrap it clear. That would eliminate most rock chipping.

I sanded and primed mine then painted flat black but have chips already. i am thinking of using some rhino liner type stuff. I will just thin it out so it is not textured and does not clog up my gun. But going to a gunmetal this time and painting the mesh the same color.

I thought about vinyl wrapping it...but I'm thinking chipping would be more of an issue to deal with than painting. (a paint chip is easily fixed with a shot of paint...)

Get it done at a shop professionally for $60-$80 and call it a day. The black gloss most people use is Mercedes paint code 040.

mchapparone...you've got the EXACT look I'm going for with mine. Glad you responded.

My cf lip, diffuser, and tail spoiler arrive tomorrow. I'm in the process of hunting down wheels (I will not be painting my calipers though).

Love the look of your CAR!!!!!!!!!!

And if you did have to repaint it, you wouldn't have to go very far! Saw your car at James at ACG one day a while back. Definitely looks sharp and love that color. You on Balboa? May need to get some touch ups to the bumper, etc.

Thanks guys! Jordan, PM replied!

FYI guys it is very important that you don't paint the grille as one piece, wherever you get the work done make sure the shop detrims the grille and preps it properly.

At my shop we refuse to do it any other way. We charge more but it gets done right the first time. Rather than gradually spending a little bit over and over again!

i just finished painting my grill flat black, and it came out absolutely perfect. you need to start with a 150-220 grit sandpaper, be patient with the 220 grit. work ur way all the way up to 600 grit so its perfectly smooth. after that use a tac cloth to remove all unwanted debris from sanding, then u are going put a few coats of primer. wet sand the primer after the first coat, then prime it again, let dry, spray gloss black ( few solid coats should do ) then clear coat and ur ready to go =] heres a pic of how mine turned out. i did it myself in my garage, it took a couple hours all together, can easily be done in 1 day.
