View Poll Results: Should I incorporate electronic exhaust cutouts?
Use them because it's one more "cool" button.

Use them because I've witnessed a performance gain first hand.

Poll: Exhaust Cutouts? Yes, No, and why?
So longtubes are en route...along with some 200 CEL cats...
I've been tempted to run a cutout infront of the cats with dumps...but not sure if it will be worth it.
I've heard and seen negligible gains by going from a free flowing exhaust to moderate backpressure in the past.
Plan is to run through the stock mufflers for now...but the cutouts could also be used at the rear of the vehicle. Cost isn't a huge factor as the exhaust is going to be primarily fabbed from the longtubes back, just wondering if anyone has any experience with the goofy little exhaust cutouts.
Thoughts?

i think you should be fine without them the EC LT's flow real good.
check you IATs before and after the install, the EC LT do a good job in displacing heat from the cylinder head.

GO FOR it man. It would be so sick to have that beast nice and quiet, and when it is time to take care of business against some American Muscle, you just open the cut outs and see their faces. Priceless imo....

My last M5 had longtubes into magnaflow mufflers and bordered on too loud and stinky for a daily driver...my girlfriend at the time compared it to a boat

That said- I'm really doubting any performance gain going from 200 cel cats and stock mufflers to open exhaust...anyone have a different perspective?

About 5 years ago, I read a post on the board about a guy who did a real elegant cut-out system and fabbed it up to his OEM pipes. Was really trick & not too costly if memory serves.

as a bolt-on, cut-outs are good for noise and that's about it. i don't know if you've ever heard our cars with open exhaust but imho, the 55k motor does not give a pleasant sound without some type of sound modification.

Yeah, I can imagine without a nice cam and a bunch more compression the open exhaust not being much to listen to...

i'm running floored fab long tubes and x-pipe into oem mufflers (no cats or resonator) and it sounds stock until i get into the throttle...and even then it only sounds moderately aggressive. you won't have to worry about the e being intolerable until you change the mufflers (or go with a poorly designed/improperly placed x-pipe).

I have exhaust cut outs on my car. First I had them right after the headers and flames would actually shoot out from them. This caused the servo motors to over heat and constantly burn out. I now have them in front of my mufflers with no problems. Either way I saw no real power gain both by dyno and butt dyno. It is however fun as heck ![Big Grin](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
To go from quiet to thunder with a push of a button is great. I have the switch in the ashtray. I have met a guy yet that didn't love it, and even a lot of ladies do.
If you want it for fun then do it. If you want it for power gain forget about it.

I voted for "cool factor" just because I would like to open them up in a long tunnel to **** off some ahole drivers here. Heaven forbid they ever get stuck in open position though, especially here in the Republik.

I have ran them on my last two turbo cars an 2008 STi and a 2003 EVO, a good friend of mine has had them on his EVO which is a built Buschur car around 400AWHp and it is a nice feature, His electronic cutouts are from QTP. Word of caution both of my cars had to have new butterflies and my buddy had to have a new motor in his replaced. You cannot just have these installed and forget about it they need to be maintained IE: lubricated and cleaned or they will freeze up or not completely close. You have to check them often to make sure no debris gets caught up in them or you will bend the butterfly. If i were to install them on my car they would be well downstream of the exhaust not right off the header. This would be for several reasons, obnoxious fumes entering the cabin; it does not sound right even though its louder with alot of noise comming directly from under the driver, I have heard cutouts on a C6 vette that were placed directly off the long tube headers and i have heard a C6 with the QTP down stream and it sounds far superior with all the noise comming out the back of the car. Just IMHO

Two videos of the cutouts I had on my car. It was very loud, but fun!

I've been kicking around this idea for a bit now - and now I'm pretty sure its the route I want to go.
Now it's just a matter of figuring out a what point in the system to have them installed. I've been holding off on doing anything waiting on my long tubes (from the group buy) but this is one thing I think I can go ahead and get done prior. I'm guessing install the dumps just before the mufflers? Right after the secondaries?
