blacking out taillights ?
I know some of you have gotten your taillights blacked out.
I wanted to know what you think is best. How did you get yours done?
I know there are several options
1.Have body shop paint them..
2. Paint them yourself.. nightshade?
3. Have them tinted..
I liked the tint idea so I dont have a perminent blacked out taillight incase one day I dont want them on there anymore. Where can you get them done or where can you buy the film? locally here in san antonio tx, I havnt found anyone that tints the taillights..
thanks

First off you shouldn't be painting them. I had my old set of tails tinted with film. Any good place that does tints should be able to tint your lights. With my new tails I bought some film on ebay and did it myself since it was only the turn signal. I also used Nightshades on my mirror turn signals and it came out great.
This is a pic of my blacked out tails and my smoked.

I believe if you go to a shop they mix clear coat with black or something and spray them. They come out extremely smooth with a perfect finish and no tackiness or anything.

This is true. The clear needs to go on thick too though. Light coats of anything from a rattle can will turn out with a matte finish. But yes, it would be easier to do light coats of tint to get the shade that you want and then a heavy coat of clear to make them glossy.

A Prius because I'm green
Mine are painted to copy the Porsche from Fast and Furious. The shop I go to owns it and it was sitting out front and I just said copy that. It took just a couple hours and they had them back on the car and I was on my way. I can ask how they painted them if you want.
It's a little dark but they are a deep cherry red and the lights during the day and night are not effected at all. The car looks much better then the dull stock red tail light color imo at least on a black car.

Here is a little better of pic on how dark they came out with one heavy coat.
If I were to do it again, I would do light shades of tint and a heavy coat of clear. It would be a little less scary and you would be able to better control the shade.
I lowered the car with washers and vinyled the all the chrome trim in matte black. Emblems and grille are painted though.
Hope this helps.

I am not a big fan of chrome either. Using vinyl on the molding strips and door handles was a pretty easy process. A little time consuming but easy.
There is a DIY on the washer drop in the DIY thread that I used for help. I did see a lot of concern about the bolts not being long enough and when you put the washers in, there aren't enough threads left to hold the nut safely. So what I did was drill the original bolt out and put a longer one in. This allowed me to use more washers to go lower and still have enough threads to get the nut on all the way. Once you see the DIY thread you will know what I am talking about. The rims are powdercoated dark grey.
If I were to tint the tails again, I would do light coats of nightshades to get the preferred shade and then a heavy coat of clear spray paint to give them a glossy finish.
