SLR/E55 What We Do Know & Do Not Know
From the factory the E55 theoretically develops 475 HP and 626 HP respectively for the SLR. So, what did MB do differently for a gain of 151 HP? Intercoolers should not be a part of the equation. Throttle body, injectors, camshafts, ECU software? What do you know? And one more thing: What has been done to the SLR's to improve performance?

- e55 hp was under rated by AMG. We have lots of dynos of guys running around 500hp stock. (I will give you everything that I have learned about um over the years)
So start with a 500hp base and add........
- SLR intercoolers HAVE to be included in increased hp. Cory at Kleemann says he sees average of 50hp increase by using SLR intercooler setup alone! It just amazing how horrible our intercooler setup is.
- ECU obviously tweaked for more HP
- SLR cams are different than E55 and have shown to increase hp
- SLR Uses dry sump oil system (unsure whether it actually INCREASES hp)
- Exhaust is truly bizarre on the SLR but has to greatly improve flow and hp over our stockers.
- Instead of using larger crank pulley, they went with tweaked ratio of gears inside the supercharger to crank up the boost. We tried to swap um out but couldn't remove them from blower. They decreased compression ratio for the SLR slightly so I wonder how much boost they cranked into it.
- Heads appear to be kinda the same. Never got a chance to compare valves side by side.
-Guts are obviously 100% different (forged etc) but not sure if that increases hp either. SLR uses same bore and stroke as ours.
- Never found out what size TB they used on the SLR but bet it's larger than our stockers.
So bottom line is.....most of us are already doing close to what they did on the SLR....sans the incredible forged guts/ dry sump system/and slr intercoolers
Those mods would get you to 626 easily.

Dry sump oiling systems are good for 15-20HP increase do to a decrease in windage, aka oil splashing against the crank impeding rotation.
And no I didn't just make those numbers up either, ha, ha.

This a something I wish aftermarket tuners would invest in making. But I guess I couldn't imagine many paying the costs upwards of $6k for such a mod. But then again I know I'd be in line.

+1 This is easily the biggest improvement on the 55k setup in the SLR. Cory told me that we loose close to 5-6 pounds of boost in our stock intercooler system. Whereas the SLR top mounts do not lose that pressure and 1. makes more power and 2. cools way more efficiently.

Never noticed the heat sheilding on the spark plug wires before.
Would make a nice addition to those with headers that sit close to their wires.

When you see E55's running 550+ at the wheels, they are at the SLR numbers... (and Dyno Jet is a *little* more forgiving)

The CLK DTM intercooler is different in that it does not have a boost bypass and it suppose to eliminate the loss of boost.

That is my DTM cooler I have for sale in the classified section. There is a huge difference in size and construction from the stock unit. Several of the major tuners can delete the boost by-pass valve completely from the ecu and that will shut it off. Jakpro1, how can you down the part soo much if you have never installed it and know how much power it gains and why the boost by-pass valve is deleted, you gain +2 more pounds of boost b/c of that. +2 more lbs. of boost is good for 20rwhp alone much less the added cooling capacity. Jody, formerly known as MIG-E55Rocket on here now goes by V12Godspeed had this part on his car and saw major benefits from it and his car was very impressive. I will post some pics I have of the inlet and body size comparisons and you can be the judge on how much its worth. Btw, the welds and construction are as good as I have seen and I think there are so few of these around that no one really stepped up to the plate so they just dropped the r&d all together and canned it. I do not have to sale it and know it has definte rwhp and seat of the pants gain, if it doesnt sale I will use it in the future

I also found this comment very intersting posted on this site from a while back...
"...As anyone will know who has driven an SLR hard in high ambient temperatures, the SLR intercooler water system is not capable of an adequately cool water supply and performance suffers because of it."
If SLR has this issue well we have no chance then ...

I think that people want top mounted intercoolers not for cooling purposes, but to increase their horse power.
SLR Top mounted coolers help a bit with cooling, but I believe it prevents the loss of boost and it will make your supercharger that much more efficient, allowing your engine to make more horse power. Our intercoolers are very inefficient and allow boost to be loss and thus we lose power. I think that's right.
