Is it worth getting one step colder plugs with stock engine?

Can I run the NGK LFR7AIX 2309 with no mods. If not which plugs should I be using on stock engine?

No do not run 1 step colder with a stock engine...stock\OEM NGKs work brilliantly.

So at what point do you make the switch? After Pulley/ECU, after Headers? after TB & Airbox?

The rule of thumb that is usually used is for every 75-100chp you add you should go one step colder.

Sorry for the silly question, but I do not know the answer. Why would you want to run colder spark plugs when you increase the hp of your engine? I always hear to do that but what are the benefits of a colder plug?

Colder plugs prevent any hot spots on the plug preveneting detonation. May not be happening but its a decent precaution.

That said the Sparkplug heat is dissapated into the head more easily with a cold plug - so you will have a cooler plug but a hotter head (albeit marginally) and with no pointed hot spots.

Great explanation Steve.

A colder plug can reduce EGT's by 100+ degrees too which is the primary reason for using them!

I am a big fan of Denso Iridiums. Which brand are you thinking of ordering Jack?

A comparable plug for the NGK #7 heat range is a #22 in Denso.

Look at Denso IK22 or IKH22 for a plug comparable to the NGK with a heat range of 7 which will be 2 steps colder than stock.

IK20 or IKH20 are just 1 step colder plugs than stock.

For reference only:
~75-100chp 1 step colder
~125-150+chp 2 steps colder

iirc, 6 is stock heat range. don't go by ngk's website if that's where you got that info.

Thanks for chiming in Mikey.

Hammer asked about a colder plug and he referenced the NGK plug with a heat range of 7 and I referenced what Denso recommends compared to other manufacturers heat indexes.

I would try a Denso 20 which is considered a comparable plug to what NGK offers in a 6 heat index.

The amount of misinformation on spark plugs is . I try and reference multiple sources before deciding on what should be considered reliable information/recommendations.

I thought the LFR7AIX 2309 NGK Iridium IX spark plug was 1 step colder than our OEM plugs. If not, which NGK plugs are?
