Talk me out of trading in my 2004 E55 for a 2005 CL65 please...
My reasoning is I could continue modding my E55 and probably not get to the level of power from a stock CL65, or just buy the CL65 and not mod it. In terms of gas mileage, I get about 16-17mpg now, and I'm expecting that to drop to 14-15mpg, so thats not a huge issue.
Fire away
It all comes down to the intangibles, do you prefer the looks of the CL65 or E55? Do you like the knowledge that you are driving a car with a twin turbo V12? You have to do what makes you happy. I would suggest driving one first.

65 is the wrath of God hands down. One simple flash mod and she is close to high 10's. No worrying about headers, heat soak, am I pushing this engine to the breaking point. Just flash and enjoy.
Only thing I ever hear from the 65 guys that have upgraded from our V8's is that it is a "different feel" on acceleration. Very smooth and quiet as opposed to the violent feel and sound from the blown V8s. Still gotta feel pretty amazing if she pulls 10 sec 1/4s.
I say if you have the chance, go for it! I would in a heartbeat.
**edit. Guess I overstated flash mod hp**

Case in point the glass on the drivers side mirror for a E55 or E63 probably somewhere in the are of $255 or so (Ebay probably not dealer) The side mirror glass on a CL65 just the glass as I have been told is near $900! Thats insane! With all of this being said the power is end all be all car numbers.
Are you looking at this one?

I saw it $48,999 yesterday but I guess prices went up. That's a nice car, as wise forum member recently said "If you can afford 2 performance german luxury cars you can probably afford to own 1 used one. "
If you are looking at buying the CL65 to chase a power number then I would say save your money, there will always be faster cars and cars that make more power, the minute you let that go you will enjoy your E55 more

Also, I got 20 mpg on hwy, but getting 8-12 mpg driving around town. It's not a big deal as I'm not driving that much, but just fyi it's lower than you think. And yes, you will spend much more than E55 for repairs, but it's a totally different feeling and you need to decide what you want(right now, as you'll surely change your mind, again). Good luck

and
THEY ARE VERY VERY RELIABLE....I have owned the most 65's then anyone else here on the board and I have had almost zero issues
infact the one I have now has 90k miles...ZERO RATTLES AND body flex...the car is a rock....A ROCK... AND MY CL65 still has all the original ABC parts...and working perfect....
HOW IS THAT for RELIABILITY.....you dont drive these cars...they will come up with issues....I personally only buy them with over 60k miles...
oh and wait there is more .......THEY R RARER THEN ANY OTHER AMG PERIOD....
LESS THEN 1200 65'S are produced each year from all the models....
oh and the engine is a $80k engine....but no worries...they have never failed....
anything less then a 65 is simply something u put your girl in.......65 is AMG'S pinnacle .....
CL's also get all the technology first hand prior to the rest of the line...and the CL is also the rarest built of all the Mercedes line as well
LESS THEN 127 CL65's hit the shores of AMERICA in 2005-2006.....maybe a hundred still here? compared to 1200 SLR's or 5000 GTR's now....plainly put
THE CARS ARE AS RARE AS THE HOPE DIAMOND....

only a matter of time until the illiterate hooptie-peddler chimed in...rlh23...I say go for it...but remember it's a buyer's market so you can be very firm with your offers...handling of course is no great shakes but acceleration even stock is relentless and the brakes are great (but expensive fyi)

I wonder if he really talks like this... starting and then... stopping... and then SHOUTING... and then stopping again... and then MORE SHOUTING...
that would be so damn funny to see!

also, there is only *one* Hope Diamond, making it unique and therefore far more rare than a CL65, even the precious american market 2005-2006. Hey, I just realized something:
I AM AS RARE AS THE HOPE DIAMOND!

So true!!!!!!!But seriously, the reason I went with the CLS55 is I am starting to see E55s like ahole around here and all the young kids are starting to afford them. I wanted something I did not see every day. Although an E55 set up right always looks badass!

If you're someone that actually thinks about gas mileage and the costs associated with that, I don't think a V12TT car is for you. V12TT ownership, outside of a warranty, is not for the feint of heart.
