06 E55: 17 inch rims instead of 18s or 19s

Got a bit of a problem, guys. Roads around here are riddled with potholes. I'm running my 06 E55 with 18 rims and tyres (instead of 19s and their ultra-low-profile tyres) for this reason. Unfortunately, though, even these do not seem to have sufficient 'absorbency' and I've lost three tyres (and bent two rims) in ten months. I don't have tyre problems on my BMW 535 or any of the other cars in my fleet, all of which run higher profile tyres. Does anyone know if it is possible to use 17 rims (perhaps wider at the rear) and higher profile tyres without losing my 186mph tyre speed rating? Much obliged for any info.
Brgds

i know for sure you won't be able to fit 17" wheels on the fronts cos they won't clear those brakes? Are you driving with suspension in comfort and in raised position? I've found that helps a bit. Also might want to make sure your tire pressure is high enough to prevent too much flex on impact with pot holes. Hope that helps

Where is it you live? Run a higher profile tire, 40-45 series will take care of it, and just go narrower so the tire does not get to tall.

Find some original SL55 rims and run those factory size tires, 255/40/18 and 285/35/18. Your speedo will read a little slow.

Thanks for the advice @E55Greasemonkey
btw here it’s full info for people to change to SL55
Wheels.

SL55
front 8.5” Offset 30” 255/40/18
rear 9.5” Offset 33” 285/35/18
Stock E55
front 8” Offset 30” 245/40/18
rear 9” Offset 39” 265/35/18

I’m looking to fit 17in on the E55, I’m pretty sure it’s posible since I have seen the clearance between the rotors and the 18in and looks like a bit more than 1/2 in all around.

All that said I’m european so don’t have the best eye for Inches, Changing the front brakes pads soon.
Will keep you all posted

Ask anyone familiar with a E55/E63 and they will tell you as the same thing. A 17" wheels will not provide you with the proper clearance needed to clear your front rotors/calipers, the minimal size wheel needed is a 18" The rears on the other hand will except a 17" wheel.
If you don't believe what we're telling you, just try to fit one for yourself, then you'll have your answer.

MB: E55 AMG, CL550, E3004M Cab + other makes :)
Just run taller tires, or stop hitting those potholes
I hate taking any sportier cars into NYC, even the surrounding highways are garbage...
