I'm officially an AMG owner, and my car already has some problems...lol.
SubscribeI just bought my very first MB and it's a 2005 E55 AMG with 51K miles. It's Pewter with charcoal interiors.
After a long inspection at home I came to the conclusion that the SC idler pulley is on it's way out so that'll need to be replaced soon.
I can also here a rather loud clunk in the rear suspension ONLY when going over speed bumps ( no matter how slow I go ), yet on irregular pavement and bumps the car feels super smooth and has ZERO noises. It's also pretty tight ( no bouncing ) which makes me think the shocks are okay but maybe the shock mounts are bad? I dunno...I'll check that later.
I do my own mechanical work so I actually kinda enjoy these things. I'm just waiting for my airmatic to fail so that I may have an excuse to install coilovers.

Congrats..... I have the same color, do you have a pano? I have been reading about the subframe bolts on these cars sheering off, you may want to have a look.

Check your sub frame bolts
MBWorld Fanatic!
LOL, everybody is thinking the same thing here with the subframe. Is the car mod'd? Have not read about stock cars losing it.
Congrats on the new car.

I had a rear thump... it turned out to be a strut and shock replacement...
but I would check the bolts too..plenty of threads of that.
Find a street bump and drive the over with the left side and then right side.. it will tell you which side has the issue.

It seems like it'll only do it if BOTH sides take the bump...maybe it IS the subframe bolts. I'll take a look at it.
I don't have the panoramic roof....I don't seem to have any options now that I think of it...lol.
EDIT: The car is bone stock.

Had the same issue here - was one of the rear shocks - $1200 fix at the stealership.

I can't SEE anything loose and subframe bolts are tight. I DO have a rear shock that is leaking pretty badly ( it's damp nearly all the way to the bottom ).Originally Posted by Borknagar

I'm gonna see if the dealer I bought it from can at least pay for the shock absorber. If push comes to shove then I'll consider simply swaping the whole thing out for coilovers.

Good luck with that, the rear is the most expensive. Hardest to change.
How is it hard to change? It looks like it's just a bolt on the top that you get from the trunk and a bolt on the bottom and unplug it, that's it. I'm doing this from memory though since I just saw for the first time every yesterday...lol. Are you sure you're not thinking about the bellow?

Man, I am glad to hear Im not the only one.
My right rear for sure has this thud, smooth over all types of pavement etc, but when i hit those little sewerlids on the right side it just thuds and also does it on other very quick dips or bumps, reflectors, etc.
Not shocks, as I took it into the Dealer and had them check everything, said everything is good.
I did not ask them to specifically check my subframe bolts, but I had them tear through the whole car before my easy care warranty ran out last month. Nothing wrong with the rear they say?
Its almost like there is a slack in the airbag by the time it hits the bump and rebounds, almost like a bad strut would do, but it only bounces that one extra time, whereas a bad strut of course you would see constant up and down vibration or bouncing.
I wish I could figure it out.
I was thinking it was something with my bumper and something knocking around but still unsuccessful.

That's what I don't get, if the strut would be bad then I wold think the car would feel "loose" in the rear but it feels super tight and rides absolutely great.
