Hey Addict, looking back right now, would you yank the whole engine out if you had to do it again??

Just curious. Seems like you are almost there.

I would consider doing all the pistons after a tear down like that... u/stand cost is always a consideration but seems if one piston has gone reasonable to assume one or two more might be on their way...and would not want to tear the motor up again.

I would also go for forged replacements... I just dont know where you can get a set that is a direct swap.

I think this motor is very strong still I checked the rest of the 3 pistons they are good! Judging by the compression I think bank 1 is good too. I researched and found for some reason in early 03 production engines cylinder #6 always seems to be the weakest

Thanks Jerry! You are the man and will be refereed to all my friends here!

A little extra effort in replacing crank bearings and a physical inspection of all the pistons (and rings) will go a long way for engine longevity. By the way, JE will make any custom forged piston for about $200-$250US per slug...I recently went through this with another project car I have.

Sorry to hear about the tragedy, but you have the right spirit and I wish you the best getting your CL back up and running soon.

All the compression from bank 1 and 2 were from a consistent 150-160PSI except for #6 had a crappy 40-60PSI. I did a leak down test to make sure it's not the valves and the valves seem to be good, do damage on them. Jerry is a good man and is helping me out on this alot! I love this engine and have not given up on it just yet, it will be back up and running soon!

I wouldn't take the whole engine out considering I gotta drain out the ABC suspension fluid ( I just got a ABC flush done 2k miles ago) , the AC lines and whole lot of other stuff still needs to be removed and drained. It looks like it can be pulled out easily but will add about 10x more work. I wouldn't yank the engine out, rather leave it in. Also check my motor mounts they are good!

Aren't these engine blocks coated with Alumasil or the like? Did the coating get messed up whenh the pistons broke? I would hate for you to put it back together and have it blowing smoke because of the messed up coating. Good luck.

Barf.

Looks eerily familiar to me.

On my C32 I had some carbon build up break free and lodge open an exhaust valve that a piston then slammed into. Symptoms - no compression, no go, all sorts of hell breaking loose on my dash.

Scarred piston:

Bent valve:

Cylinder walls were just fine though thank god.

I feel for you.

I was adamant about having an AMG tech do the rebuild for me. Cost me almost as much as that damn car was worth and I was 3000 miles out of warranty. Learned my lesson there.

It's not a coating. The piston bores are made from Alusil. It's approximately 70% aluminum and 30% silicon. A special honing process brings out the silicon in the aluminum. The bores are incredibly hard and last a very long time if the engine is properly maintained.

Fantastic news! Congrats man. *** great work on the rebuild too. Goes to show with a little determination and know how that these cars can be brought back from the brink without breaking the bank!

Total was a little over $10K for all the parts and labor. Pretty brutal.

When it happened (I didn't necessarily "feel" anything) it was interesting because believe it or not for about 5-10 minutes after a cold start up, the car drove fine. Once things got warm, the valve actually expands some and wouldn't create a seal...so it misfired...shut itself down...and was just a total mess.

Just a freak scenario. Sucked.

haha Finny's pictures were so helpful!

Thanks guys, this has been a brutal DIY but made alot easier thanks to Jerry and Jake . Some minor things I got to take care of now but the main big part is done. Battery is dead, I charged it and tried to start the engine but starter motor is just going "click, click, click". hmm.. time for new battery?

OK gave the battery a really good long charge and it starts up just fine. Oil seems to be leaking from the pan area must sort out all the little glitches now. But already it feels alot better than before!

Glad to hear it wasn't a serious issue.
The oil leak is common, so are the glitches. Hopefully you'll get them sorted on your next visit to the shop and you'll be off to enjoying your ride again.

Wow...10K is much more than I expected. How much were the parts alone if I may ask?
