If you want to spend $6000+ grand on a exhaust to save weight heres what I would do... stock mufflers are super heavy, replace them with eurocharged ones (and they sound/look sweet) remove the 2nd cats and resonators (probably another 50lbs). Forged wheels should also help.

For about $1800 you can replace your 67 pound boat anchor battery with a 7 pound Braille carbon fiber l-ion battery. It's a 15 minute DIY.

They have cheaper ones, but I'd probably avoid those as well if you drive your car anywhere but a race track.

Trying to put some numbers to this...

*Every 100 pounds of weight removed will reduce your 1/4 mile time by approximately 0.10 sec.
*Every 10 HP added will reduce your 1/4 mile time by approximately 0.08 sec.

It's not linear, so I say approximate. Those numbers will get smaller as you get more extreme.

Your call on where to start... Me? I always look at cost vs benefit.

The Braille battery will give you about a 0.06 sec advantage in the 1/4 mile.
It would take an additional 7.5 HP to do the same.

Headers are about $2800?? Gain is about 40HP??
So you would have to reduce the weight of your car about 300 lb to get the same affect.

Again, this is all just calculated info to try to show some perspective on weight reduction and HP addition. I have no idea what you are going to use the car for, plus it's your money.

back to the battery thing... Emoving is on to something, but a different brand.

I have been using Odyssey batteries for years in my cars, and bikes.

There is a definite weight savings there.

I just might have to break the ice and be the first one to put one in the E55.

instead of titanium. why not an aluminum exhaust? an entire mid section out of aluminum mated up to a eurocharged muffler setup should save quite a bit of weight.

Aluminum is not good for exhaust systems. NO BUENO. It's rigid and brittle. It's extremely difficult to bend without crimping(unless very thick). Aluminum HATES VIBRATIONS---has a tendency to crack. Also, the melting point(700 degree C) for aluminum is much much lower than titanium(?) or SSteel(1700 degrees C)..

This means that exhaust temps would dramatically change the aluminum's qualities(temper) from constant heating and cooling.

I've seen some mufflers that were a mix of Stainless tubing with a aluminum body, but super uncommon.

ive use aluminum in the past on my turbo cars for there downpipe and exhaust system and not once did i have a problem. also, no need to bend the piping. just buy mandrel bent pipe and fab it up from there or the good ole pie cuts if you have time.

i would have thought that the downpipe would be the first to crack but after 2 years of constant beating and extremely high temps it has yet to fail.

OK, now introduct a bunch of bends tucked into tight spaces with curves and such, and in bolted together sections... Oh and dont forget the cat(which has similar temps as would come out of a cumbustion chamber..

You have to remember the areas that are most effected by heat are the outside of the radius of the curved sections. On a straight piece of pipe.. not quite as bad.

If you get a chance, take a thermo-gun and read the temps on sections of your exhaust.... you will notice wherever there is a bend-especially tighter bends the temperatures will be dramatically higher.

there are many of us that have tried and discussed lightweight batteries on the forum over the years...braille, odyssey, voltfreaks, and optima all come to mind. do a quick search before you spend money on something that's already been tried because there's some good info around here.

As far as the Braille goes--- not an option. I'd rather wrap an Odyssey in Di-Noc LOL.

don't recall off hand so i'll have to look at the model number when i get home. it's my track only battery just because i'm paranoid about the charging system and an sbc failure.

I've had an Odyssey in my 66 Chevy II for years... BUT, about the only real accessory in that car is a dome light LOL. It's very minimal in it's requirements, start the car and it's job is done. But as far as cranking power and capacity, that little battery is AMAZING. I believe it's a PC925.

So, whadya think...... I could give the PC1200 a try and make a "test thread" out of it. It only weighs 35 LBS

Track only b/c of light weight, and they don't have much reserve power to power a car like these for any length of time. At lease not without the car running.
Curious of the model and weight too. Looking to put something in my track car.
