Question on M mode...

Hi,
Searched the forum but didn't find what I was looking for.

Was doing a spirited run in M mode and was able to shift up and down through the gears. When I took an exit and made a right turn, my speed came down to about 40mph and the display read 4th gear. I tried to upshift to 5th but the display stayed at 4th. Pull both the down shift and up shift paddles couple times but no change. Does the M mode prevent you from up/down shifts at certain speeds and RPM? Drove various cars with manumatic transmissions but never seen any of them prevented me from upshifting even at low speeds.

Thanks.

Thats sounds wrong, go to your MB dealer. Also what were the road conditions like, very wet or icy?

At certain speeds you will not be able to upshift, but at 40, you should have been able to downshift to 3rd or 2nd for sure.

I tested for the minimum speed in M mode for 4th gear is about 34mph, it prevents the engine rpm too low so it will not let you upshift to the 5th at 40mph, but sure you can downshift to 2nd and 3rd in 40mph.

5th gear is long(it will do over 240 mph) you're asking the car to drop in 5th where the rpms would drop so low that it would stall the engine.

At what rpm were you when you tried 5th gear?

Hi All,
Thanks for the feedback. I don't remember what RPM I was at but I don't think it was higher than 3K. I just haven't drove in the M mode all that much so this was one of the oddities that I noticed.

I drive mine in M almost always and I noticed that you typically can't upshift until you hit 2k rpm. Going into 4th I think you have to be at at least 1800rpm. Will check when I move the car in a little bit.

Just tried today, you can up shift to 5th at 41mph, but once go back to 40 it will drop back to 4th.
