Durable Wheel Finishes??

my fairly new powder coated wheels are already chipping -- I now know that shop sucks at it -- but if done correctly shouldnt it be one of the more durable finishes???

I know there is painting -- how does that compare?

what are the other options? what is the thing Volks do to their bronze wheels? I had a set along time ago and they never had any problems -- Can that be done in black?

Yes, powdercoating, if done right, should be one of the more durable finishes.

Painting, also if done right, can also be fairly durable. I had a set of wheels on my Mustang painted back in 2001 or 2002 and there is not a chip on them to this day. I've put maybe 20,000 miles on them since then.

I've found that automotive paint can be quite a bit more consistent for durability. Also, the thicker it is put on the greater the tendancy to chip. Also, adding a bit of flex agent can also make the paint less likely to chip.

Powder coating is going to be your most durable option out there. Just find a reputable business that does a better job.

I've never had issues with powdercoated alum parts. It's certainly more durable than paint or anodizing in my experience.

To correctly powder coat the piece being coated and the coating are heated up to close to 500 degrees.

Steel you can bake at higher temps that alum. If you bake at the higher temps with aluminum it will anneal the aluminum making it softer compromising strength.

They have lower temp powder coatings for aluminum but they are just not as effective.

How do I know this..... On my C6 I ordred CCW wheels and asked to have them powder coated. THEY WILL NO DO THIS and the above was basically their response.

My experience comes from powder coating forged aluminum wheels on previous vehicles and never having issues with them.

anodizing: what is the process and can most shops do this? My old Volks had this finish and it was rock solid.

I was going to say Anodized finish as Kinesis on my Porsche Turbo are 5 years old and are anodized black. In 5 years/14,000 miles they are still going strong with out any issues.
However i have heard that some times black changes to purple You need to confirm that though.

Anodizing is an electrochemical process using a dilute sulfuric acid and water bath and a DC power source. The anodize coating is actually aluminum oxide which is very hard. The coating builds into the surface metal thus creating a hard corrosion resistant coating. Although quite hard, the coating has microscopic pores which allow material like organic dyes to be deposited. That is why you see so many different colors of dyed anodizing. It can literally be the color of the rainbow.

I doubt too many shops have anodizing capabilities. It is not difficult but takes some knowledge. It also takes a wastewater system to deal with the rinsing waters and old baths that have metals suspended in them. The wastewater must be treated before sending it back to the municipal sewer systems.

This can be the case if black organic dye was used to achieve the color. Organic dyes are not colorfast and will be affected by sunlight over time. Black unfortunately takes on an ugly purplish look. We call it burple.

There is another process called electrolytic color. It is still anodizing, but the metal tin is deposited in the anodic pores instead of dye. This is a common architectural product. There is a good chance you walked through an electrolytic black anodize and glass storefront already today and did not notice.

HHHhhmmmm organic dyes. Interesting. I always wondered why some anodizing held up betther than others.

I had a WHOLE BUNCH of stuff anodized on my boat, billet speaker grilles, grab bars, deck rails, guage panels, cup holders..on and on and on.

It looked KILLER for about a year, and then any area exposed to the most sun seemed to get UV faded from Red to like a pink with a whitish base.

Powder coating is one of the most durable finish you can get for wheels.
I would take your wheels to a good powder coating shop so it wont start chipping.
