Performance Package W212 versus W211 Differences

Hey Guys,

Just curious about something...so what is the performance difference between the Performance Package equiped W212 and the Performance Package equiped W211 E63AMG? I'm no AMG expert and am still learning my way around the various models. From everything I have seen, the W212 appears to have a lot more electronics associated with it. Which can be good and bad.

On paper (car rags) they appear to be very similar. I could be wrong here, but it appear that the W211 might have the edge in the 1/4 mile and 0-60 MPH runs, but the W212 might have the edge in the braking department. Am I way off?

Anyway...Happy Wednesday.

Regards,
John

Well, to be honest, the primary differences are in the base package.

I would bet a P30 W211 E63 having a tough time hanging with a standard W212 E63 on a road course.
W212 has:

1. Bigger rubber.
2. Wider front track with true coil suspension
3. Improved electronics options
4. MCT

I will say that the W212 Pre-Safe is more conservative that the W211. I had to get really bent out of shape on Thunderhill for Pre-Safe (for the first time ever) to kick in on my W211. The W212 will go into Pre-Safe mode braking hard into turn 2 on Laguna Seca. It is odd to feel the brake pedal fall away from your foot.

The W212 P30 has been noted for being very stiff (as was the C63 P30). The W211 P30 is 50% stiffer than stock, but I have never heard major complaints. The P30 I drove in the AMG Academy was not noticeable because of the type of driving I was doing.

The similarities are:
Both are stiffer.
Both have LSD.

On a road course, as Jon mentioned, the W212 E63 will probably destroy the W211 E63. However, in a straight line acceleration, the W211 E63 seem to have the edge due to the difficulties of launching the MCT on the W212. On the track, I've seen many W212 E63s run 13 second passes mainly because the tranny does not allow for a clean burnout, which is probably a safety condition put in place due to the MCT's tendancy to heat-up way too quickly. I think if this restriction is removed or temporarily disabled, we'd see more competitive runs from the W212. Freeway runs, on the other hand, should favor the W212 because of the faster shifts of the MCT and 20 extra hp at the top-end.

I've gone through so many options when purchasing Mercedes in the past, and have learned that the best true option for the E63 is the BSP: Baby Seat Package....

Here it is in action.... 11.9 @ 118 mph on stock street tires
