Wink I must be retarded!

Okay well I finally have enough ***** to ask this stupid question, "How do I view my current location and the streets while driving without inputing a destination?" I do not believe you can, but thought I better ask since this is quite bothersome!!!

Buy a Garmin. Problem solved.

But seriously, I didn't even know E55 owners used their OEM navigation. It frustrates the hell out of me.

While you're driving, push the "Map" button. Then set the map scale to your preference.

I don't know if the E55's have this, but one of the menu's in the center holographic screen is the street you are currently on. Or if you have a nav destination, what street you are on, and when you have to turn, etc.

I can never pass up a chance to tell the guys at MB (dealer) how Navi sucks and my cheap a$$ garmin kicks its butt. I imagine they are getting tired of my crap because they know it too.

I use mine a good bit. I agree it was frustrating at first but after you use it a bit it gets better. Now I love it! It's really good for locating hotels and gas stations. It even recognizes specific casinos--ha

fwiw, the 2009-current systems are so much better. Last week I was in an older 2005 MB and that system was worthless. Plus the later ones allow you to play DVD-A 5.1 audio discs and take advantage of all the speakers and the Logic 7 Surround. Sounds great.

I'm pretty sure a conversion is possible but that you have to use a different loom.

I tried what you guys said using the "map" button as I have before, but that does not show your current location or move with your car. I was more interested if there were a basic gps map that showed streets, but I guess that was not available then. Whatever.....

Can't you set it to "vehicle position map" (?) I can only speak of the 2009 version, but it'll pin point your spot and move as you move plus have street names and place icons, etc.. (like a Garmin.) You can hit + or - and it'll zoom in or out. I'm sure there must something similar on the older systems.

Not sure if I understand what you are asking... You're saying, just to have the thing know where you are, and have it move along with you while driving - without putting a destination - right?

With mine, what you are describing just happens automatically, as soon as you press MAP

Mikey I'm with you. Just tried for 10 minutes and there's no way I can pull up the map without setting a destination in navi. Period.

Hopefully someone can chime in with how we can change the settings to allow us to just pull up a map.

FWIW, you can always pick a destination and then cancel route guidance. I'm pretty sure it leaves it up.

I'm in a 2005 BTW.

That's rather odd since mine does it automatically too. Will fiddle around with mine and post my finding. It won't show all street names on the map but will show the current street on the IC.

If I've got satellite radio going and hit "Map" - it won't change anything.

Maybe it has something to do with the COMAND mode that I'm in? I swapped out my logo for the AMG one. Seems like before that my "MAP" button worked.

Hmmmm. When I hit the map button it does not track my car, yet shows a circle with intersecting lines going through and you can move it around using the arrow buttons (does not move with car and is static). If I pick a destination and get the navigation working and hit cancel route guidance than the map disappears and there is no tracking going on.

Hit NAV
Hit Home
Hit the same button for Home again.
Gives you Circle+Map.

I'm still irritated that my MAP button doesn't work.

Who uses the MB nav unit? It's junk compared to the cheapest Garmin. Not to mention an update disc is $250. HAHAHAHAH They must be joking.

I've got an iPhone with TomTom maps [free...jailbroken].

But that's not the point of this thread. It's to figure out why MB gave us a button labeled "MAP" that doesn't have a function in our cars.

Tell me more about this SAMRT phone!

I'm pretty sure this has to do with something I changed with the AMG logo. I'm gonna try this tonight:

- Press the “Keybrd” soft key for the list of possible keyboard types

- Upon correcting the variant and keyboard settings, turn ignition off and ensure MOST and CAN asleep
- Turn ignition ON and check functionality of all keys using different applications

Have either of you guys tried to install the Comand Update, and tried to load a newer map DVD?

And I thought My 2006 Navigation really sucked. What you guys are describing is much worse.....

Alright Mikey, we're not retarded.

Went in to the engineering menu or whatnot by hitting 5-3-7 when the radio was playing and holding it.

Hit button in upper left associated with "Keyboard."

Changed it from "Developer Mode" to W211AMGUSA or whatever corresponds to us [it will be obvious]

Hit the button associated with "Back" in the lower right.

Make sure W211AMG is selected if you want to retain your AMG startup screen.

Let car reset itself after turning the car off for like 5 minutes.

I've now got a working Map button.
