This is not a simple task that you would want to consider doing yourself. Causing damage to engine would be very easy

If I were you I would poor that oil cleaning stuff into the motor to dim the lifter sound and trade it in. Your gonna pay an arm and a leg in wrench time for that job.

If you are not experienced in performing engine work I would not do it. Especially on the M156.
It would probably take a few hours if your are VERY experienced with this engine.

I think it takes between 8-10 hours of labor to fix.

Sorry, you are looking at more than a simple lifter / bucket change out.
There are known issues.

Intersting link but suprising that the op in that thread never posted what the result was....thread ended a week after it started.

Were these "known" issues carried over into the '09 MY or did MB finally get them worked out ?
(this op didn't mention his year)

My '08 has a very slight lifter tick only on rare occasions. Goes away within about 3 minutes once the oil starts warming up. I was told this is common on the M156 and there's nothing to worry about by a master MB mechanic

There was speculation of changes to valve train, only other change was for the 63's oil.

I had my lifters replaced under warranty and the ticking has recently come back. It's not as bad as it was before the replacement but I can hear it. The AMG tech told me not to worry about it as well.

YM, please elaborate on the oil ( as delivered from the factory, I assume?)

I ask because the last '09 I test drove had a distinct tap in the passenger side bank.

He might mean that AMG has said 5W-40 instead of 0W-40. But I was told by an AMG regional tech that the reason is for emissions and nothing else (less phosphorus in the 5W and apparently better for the cats.) Both 5W-40 and 0W-40 are spec'd for the M156 under either 229.5 or 229.51.

fwiw, my 2009 has no tapping noise. It did at start up but only early on in its life (before 12k), and would go away after the oil temp rose.

But at 25k now, there is no noise even at start up. I also haven't used any add oil whatsoever between changes (oil consumption dropped also at around 12k.) I did change the factory fill out at 1,200 miles and then did two more changes at around 3k each. I got a UOA on the samples and after the second oil change there were no more metals or silicon in the oil sample.

The M156 is in the C, ML, R, S, CL, CLK, CLS, SL. Has the same issue been brought up on those boards? I know some C owners have mentioned it.
