June Issue of Road and Track

don't know if this has already been posted but the issue has a Comparo between E55, RS6, M5, and Jag Stype R. To give you the highlights the Jag got 4th, the BMW got THIRD, the RS6 got second, and the E55 GOT FIRST.

whats even more impressive is the E55 times:

0-60- 4.2 seconds
0-100 - 9.4
1/4 mile - 12.4 @ 116.4 mph

they said it possessed "sheer, overwhelming hot-rod thrust"

for perspective the 360 Modena got 0-60 in 4.3, and quarter in 12.8 @112

they also praised the interior, suspension, and transmission

Ooo yes , and I was really impressed becasue I do believe that is the first TIME that an AMG, or a Mercedes-Benz win a car's mag review.

Not really. Mercedes has many a win to its credit. The S-class usually wins in every comparison test. The E-class has done pretty well over the years. Here's a few examples:

- C&D Mar. '03 : E320 (W211) wins over BMW 530, Audi A6, Lexus GS300, Infiniti M45, Lincoln LS, and Jag S-type
- R&T Feb. '98 : E430 (W210) wins over BMW 540, Lexus GS400, and Cadillac STS
- R&T Mar. '95 : E420 (W124) wins over BMW 540, Lexus LS400, Infiniti Q45, Cadillac STS, and Lincoln Continental.

The AMG wins are less, as BMW M tends to dominate. But the new E55 has already won several comparison tests in the European mags.

and it will continue to win....

until the new M5 hits the streets. All the technology in the new E55 is new so of course it should beat the heck out of something that is 7 years old. I love AMG vehicles but the new M5 is gonna give it a run for the money. Suppose to have around 500 hp. Yikes...

That is if one can overcome its hideous appearance. When I was at the AMG event Wednesday, Rich Ceppos-Editor of Autoweek- was there and I was discussing BMW's latest vehicles. He said their reader polls were very critical of BMW's direction and the majority didn't like the new 5 series.

It's a game of leap frog. Just like when the classic E55 was introduced, it was proclaimed King of the Hill, beating out the old BMW & Jag offerings of the time. But when the current E39 M5 was introduced a year later, it leaped frogged the E55's HP. However, this time around there is one major difference - the E60 5 series is UGLY. I like BMW's, have owned five of em, I even kind of like the new 7 and Z4. But I just don't care fore either the exterior or interior of the new 5.

I think BMW is spying on E55 first and then makes their cars stronger to beat E55, Why you think they always one year late with their M5?

it sure seems that way, but sometimes it is a sale strategy, wait until a new products has been released then improve on it and claim you have bettr technology.

I'd say they don't play fair/clean

Believe that if it makes you feel better. The m3 was launched before the c32, who's waiting for who now? The z4 also came out before the next gen slk, and the 7 series before the next generation s class.

BMW has many innovations that MB has yet to match, and vice versa.

We are talking about the Highperformance AMG vs M power, so your statement would be valid only for the C32

Actually the 7 series was DELAYED because of the launch of the S Class, according to industry insiders. Whether or not the reasons behind the delay are correct, the S was supposed to have preceded the 7 by 18 months.
BMW took the opportunity to delay the 7 due to either 1) a perceived need to counter and exceed all key S amenities offered by MB, or 2) because the "I-drive" was bugged.

I did not hear that, but it might be true. The point is, each car has it's own cycle. On some BMW's for example, the next gen model will come out before the next gen Mercedes model, and vice versa. I don't think BMW has this huge history of waiting for everyone to release everything and then producing their car and sitting back and laughing. It takes a few years to develop a car, it doesnt happen overnight. The next gen M5 was under development before the specs on the w211 e55 were even announced.

E55
I got the magazine a couple of days back.

I felt that although they gave the E 55 firsta place, they wrote more enthusisatically about the RS 6. My wife disagrees. Thoughts?

The RS6 did win on pure points without the price factor, the E55's lower price gave it the win. I like the RS6, but spending $80K+ on an Audi? No way Jose.

Also, Steve Millen picked the E55 as his personal choice. As he's the only true racer of the bunch, his view on the E55 is what stuck out in my mind.

Even Millen's comments are conditional. But I was referring to hte tone of the writing. e.g., `if there is a better car for going effortlessly fast, I haven't driven it.'

Re the price difference, do you know if the RS 6 is going at MSRP. How do the options compare?

I have brand loyalty reasons for going for the MB --- though.

as loyal as i am to benz, the rs6 needs to be given consideration for 4 wheel drive alone (and that's about it in my mind) if you live in inclimate weather.

I don't know, but I'd bet the RS6 is going for MSRP or maybe even at a slight discount. I do agree that R&T did say a lot of good things about the RS6, if it was priced closer to the E55 it would have won. I like the body style of the current RS6, newer is not always better. The next A6's grill is going to take some getting use to, kind of fugly at first glance. I also think Audi does a better job of interior quality vs. MB or BMW. But the kicker for me is simply MB's style, clout, and outright speed. As R&T stated, the E55 makes you shout "I'm the King of the World!". The rich, famous, and notorious all drive MB's not Audi's. $45K for an S4, maybe, but $85K for any Audi - uh uh.
