want to down grade from a 180 quick question
Want to go with a lower boost to be on the safe side. Quick question, I'm EC tuned for 180 if I run a 172 or 175 will I need a retune or can I still run it and be on the safe side? I'm thinking if anything I'll be running a bit more rich vs lean (bad).

i think you should be fine. all you are technically doing is running less boost. if you were gonna step up in the size of a pulley then i would suggest a retune. however, i may be wrong. we'll see what others have to say.

Power is not killing engines, knock is. Regardless, I agree that all the OP really needs to do is take away a bit of timing and run a slightly richer A/F ratio ( I have no idea what his setup is but I'm assuming it's pretty aggressive due to what's happened to him ).

Well if you go from a 180 to a 172 or 172 your car will make less boost, which will make your car run richer then it should. This will actually be safe for the vehicle, however richer means you will waste more fuel and also foul out the plugs a lot faster. If you have a EC tune I think Jerry will reflash it for no charge but don't hole me to this.

Actually, there is no reason why his car should run richer. The vehicles map sensor should pickup the fact that there is less boost and adjust fueling and timing as necessary. The only problem is that if the fueling maps used at those boost levels were never tuned properly then the car could actually run leaner with the smaller pulley instead of richer. Just because he runs less boost doesn't automatically mean he will run richer, it's all in the fuel maps and he will most likely be requiring a new tune due to this.

Hmm I would say heat is probably the #1 cuplrit of knock on our cars. Generally our cars run pretty rich.... I still need to be convinced about this fuel starvation issue at high rpm and load.

You would be correct if the tune he had would allow for the factory correction specs of up to 30%, this is to allow for bad fuel or altitude changes. However from what I've heard in the past from many tuners and don't hold me to this since I'm just repeating what was told to me, one of the specs that really gets changed is the correction ratio and it usually drops down to only 10% or so. So doing the math between a 180ml and 172 ml pulley in a ratio between the boosts, I believe its somewhere in the 20% range so, if your car software tune only allows for a 10% variable change how would a 20% change in the boost allow for a car to fully adjust the fuel ????

Thus what I'm trying to say...if he is not tuned for the smaller pulley, he may not run richer as most people here are predicting. He may very well run leaner due to fuel mapping not being able to compensate because it wasn't meant to at those boost levels for the same reasons you specified above. The ECU will try to adjust it's self...but if the tuning of the maps is wrong at those boost levels then who knows what would happen, this is because the tuner cannot tune for boost levels he never sees while tuning the vehicle, he can only guess. But it's all in the tune.

In what gear did it go lean like that?
What mods?
What's the blue line for ( 29K rpm? )?
Was that A/F for one cylinder in particular or all together?
Were those EGT readings from a probe or calculated?
