The red battery light
Hi everyone,
A couple of days ago i had the red battery light come on. I was going to book it into the dealer to get them to see what it was but thought i would investigate it first.
What happens is the light comes on in the morning but turns off during the day. If i let the car sit for a few hours it turns on again then it goes off. The dash Voltage is showing 12.6 volts when the car is off and +14 volts when its running and also cranks fine to start. This ruled out the chances of it being the main battery and the alternator.
Tonight after work i pulled out the multimeter and check the small battery in the engine bay under the cabin air filter. It read 11.18 volts. When the car is running it is +14 volts then when i turn it off it slowly drops down again from 12.1 volts back to 11.18. I have not tested it in the morning yet but i can guarantee it is lower then 11.18 volts. If i get time tomorrow morning i will do it before work.
From what i know any 12 volt battery that reads under 11.8 volts is a stuffed battery. Could someone please confirm?
Cheers
Adrian

A fully charged and healthy battery will normally show 13+ volts. Sounds like you have a bad battery.

i had the same thing happen to me last week - the smaller battery was dying - since my car is an 04 the shop replaced both - not bad for orig battery to last 7 years - now no more red lights - i paid $375 at a local shop here in N. CA

I used a regular motorcycle battery from a local battery store and it was $89 or so. Easy to DIY.
FYI, there are a few things that can cause the battery light; including the voltage regulator, the battery control module, the alternator, and both batteries. Oh and the relay lol.

I had a bad battery up front which destroyed the original AND a replacement trunk battery before I figured it out. I believe it's a BS-14 motorcycle battery. I bought an AGM one from Wal-Mart for $80 or so and it's worked great for the last 9 months or so.

Just recently bought a 2006 CLS 500, red battery light started coming on. Taking it back while it's still under warranty, but I noticed when I switched the knob for the headlights to another position, the red battery light went off and STAYED off. Does any one know why or may there still be a problem? Regardless, I'm taking it back to the dealer just to be on the safe side. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Go down to your local Kmart and pick up a motorcycle battery. I know you have those stores down in Oz. I've been to the one in downtown Kalgoorlie 8 hours east of you.
Make sure its a 14-BS like you pictured. You will need to fill it up with the supplied battery acid and then charge it up before you put it in.
The Vazha started a thread on how to replace this battery. resist the urge to use needlenose pliers to pry off the bolt like he did in his thread.
