Help: new engine or rebuild?
#27
One has to wonder who tuned it. Sadly we'll probably never know since it was tuned prior to your ownership. Also, what dyno operator would allow pulls without fans?! I hope you get it back on the road soon.

Yup stock exhaust except for straights in place of the resonators
Pardon the newbie question but coming from turbo cars, what is the ideal a/f for the E55k?

Same with a turbo car. High 11's/low 12's in peak torque and mid to low 11's in the higher rpms. It's more of a personal thing though...some people like running richer a/f ratios.

Someone's take on "building an engine" and "easy" can be very ambiguous. My version of built to OEM specs means it will last 100K+ (well taken care of) and take a beating too.
So yes, anyone with tools can "build" and engine, but there's more to it then that. I would take a 'Factory tech built' mid-mileage AMG motor, over some random shop or forums person build anyday - if it was a blind choice. If you know someone who builds motors WELL. From the professional perspective (not exaggerated forums bs), yes go head.
Have you seen the torque plates used in the AMG factory? History on used long block a must though, bet it comes with warranty too. Compression and bench dyno'd to, etc.
If you do build it yourself, take your time - wont take long.
but hey like GT-ER said fly him to you, he'll build it for half the price. Call him on it! =)

Regardless, based on the information given by the OP and the fact that he seems to not want to wait, I do agree that his best option is a used engine.

Your a/f is lean for those numbers,Im going to guess your pump is dead and were pumping 190degree air into it.Did you get a chance to log your intake air temps?
11.3 a/f is great when the intake air is cold and making well north of 490whp.For your car to put down under 400 means the intake temps were skyrocketing past 180 and that was causing it to knock since and your tune was not dumping fuel.
a stock car will get into the 9s a/f with a dead pump to save the engine.

Maybe his pump is not dead though. Having a 180mm pulley on near stock exhaust must make a lot of boost and heat.

Most of you have a lot more experience with this engine then I do....
I have a 3 month old PLM heat exchanger and a 3.5 month old Johnson IC pump on the car. It was a 90 degree day and the car was dynoed w/o fans! I was one of several cars dynoed that day under the same conditions.
My IAT temp after the first run spiked at 170 but averaged a 150. Let me know what you think....

On a hot day when the IATs spike the ECU pulls timing and dumps fuel to cool the combustion chamber. I am sure you were pig rich when the damage was done.

My thoughts exactly!
What are your thoughts on this setup? 82mm TB w/ TTM fuel rail and injectors, and EC long tubes with stock pulley?
Yea or ney?

yes keep the 180. get some wiesco forge pistons (about 1000 for eight of them) for the new motor.
add a rear tank to increase the total fluid capacity in the s/c cooling system so IATs will be even lower (you can add ice when every you feel like racing)

I said I would install it for half price, not build it...lol. Building engines is honestly pretty easy, it's just time consuming but it's not reocket science. Especially an engine as mechanically simple as the M113. I'd swap out the pistons and place forged pistons in the build to ensure I have a BETTER than OEM engine and avoid future meltdowns.
