E55's rare compared to M5?
I've been searching Ebay periodically, just catching up on the market. Tonight really caught me off guard, there is currently only (1) 2006 MBZ E55 for sale compared with (27) 2006 BMW M5's. What do you guys think it is? Is it the new F10 that's driving the M5 owners to unload? I dont think it was like this when the W212 was coming out.
Does anyone know production numbers for these cars (both BMW and MBZ)?
Another crazy thing I've been noticing is that those M5's are holding strong in the mid-high $30K's, similar to 07 lower millage E63's. What gives?

My guess is because that v10 platform wont be available any more hence holding some value....also he e60 platform still doesn't look dated... when does the f10 m5 drop? perhaps when that beast hits the streets, prices will drop.

The total US sales of the W211 E55/63 (not total production numbers) is 10784. Out of that total, were 7937 of the W211 E55s and 2847 E63s (with only 431 2009 models.)
8800 of the E60 M5s were sold in the US. Total production worldwide was 20548 (that includes 1025 E60 wagons that never made it to the US.) The E60 M5 was the most popular M5 ever built so far.
So the E55 sedan and the M5 had similar sales numbers in the US. Add 193 E55 wagons and 153 E63 wagons to the US sales mix, and overall there were less M5s sold than E55/63s. 11130 W211 AMGs versus 8800 E60 M5s.
As far as resale, I know that the average residual back in 2006 was 62% for the M5 from BMW leasing. Current resale value is pretty low now on M5s actually, but AMGs have always been lower. The M5 is just more recognized and tends to be a car easier sold to people wanting their first used performance car, etc.. It's just a lot better known car. More people know about BMW's M division than AMG.

So true, I sure didnt know what the heck an E55 was few years back LOL, I knew it was an "amg" but didn't really know what beast lurks inside... Where you hear "M5" all the time and you associate speed and power. (But little do people know, m5 has no power lol)

To your first question: Because E60's look 10 years old already, while W211's still look good (E60 = insta-dated design IMO, but I'll admit that the M models look actually pretty damn good).
Second question: "M5/M3" are more iconic and regarded nameplates than AMG thus far (doesn't help that M-B keeps switching the model name, and now it doesn't even make sense starting with 2012 MY's).

Wow, I'm sure most people will not agree with you. I find the E60 M5 far more modern looking than the W211 E55/E63, especially the front when compared the the E55 ( not so much more then the E63 ). I do however love the E63 styling just as much as the M5 ( even if I find it looks older ) and the excess power the E55 has is what ultimately won me over.

My experience was sort of the opposite, I saw a ton more e55's out there compared to e39m5s. IMO the e60m5 compares directly to the e63 since they are the current versions of their respective platforms (discounting the new F10 chassis). In that comparison, the e63 is definitely more modern than the e60m5 which for all events and purposes looks like a cough drop.

same her I rarely see other E55/63's around my area and on the freeway but m5's and m3's littered all over. I was originally going with an E46 M3 but considering 4 other people in my neighborhood have one, It's just one more reason to love my merc.

E55K W211, has a legendary engine, also found in all the variations of the SLR, the 5 speed gearbox can withstand up to 2000Nm of torque, 5spd box still used in the S65 AMG, SL65 AMG, EV12 W211. It was a true DTM box, that could take more punishment than any other gear-box, yet giving the comfort and super smooth changing.
The ratio of the 5th gear is so long that you will be able to get to 400Km/h and more.
Only in a Mercedes Benz, the car that was built in the Past for the Future.

V10 M5 E60 came out late 2003, which was a 2004 German build and a reality to the world by 2005. The E39 had one of the nicest V8 motors with a 6 speed manual box. All M5's were great cars from the E28 through to the E60 M5. Lets see what becomes of the F10 M5, should be another great M5, well atleast I hope so, the E60 V10 had the worst gearbox in any car that I can remember, just hard, even in it's softest setting.

The E60 M5 front just looks much more aggressive than E55K, overall its a more sporty looking car but this is not what you define a car. I love my E55 because of the engine, comfort and luxury not only by appearance.
However, I see more M5 and M3 than any AMG around....... I always thought we are minority around. Also see a lot of M6 in Orange county area and Chino/Ontario area.

Hoping the next M5 includes the DCT from the present M3 cars. That would rock...

To me, the W211 is far and away a nicer and more timeless looking car than the E60. The E60 looks downright ugly, unless equipped well and as an M, or M-Sport Packaged model.
The E-Coupe to me is nice, but not nice enough to have chosen over the new E Sedan.
