Excellent write-up, as always! You've got one of the best looking cars out there on the road - period. I know you love the white, but if you had white there'd be days when you'd want black and vise versa. Not that often...but you would

E63 AMG
Awesome read man...It is funny how close that story is to my own. I bought my black on black 07 E63 last month from a Jaguar dealer after months of chasing after M5/M6's. I kept going back and forth in what I wanted, the color combo, 5 vs 6, mileage, year, god knows what else. I was in awe of the M series after owning an M3. The ONLY reason I went and test drove the E63 was on recommendation from my friend who said I would forget the M altogether if I went and drove it. I laughed it off for the most part, but after seeing one come up for sale a few miles from my house I said screw it, lets just go drive it for fun.

The first thing I remember saying to myself is this car is stunningly beautiful and evil as Sh$# at the same time. I knew it would be fast, but my expectations were more on par with a big body sedan with a big engine. Great in a straight line, but a hog in the corners with loose steering. I took the car out on the highway and let her rip...now this part is a bit fuzzy, but I think somewhere amid the acceleration there was a rip in the space time continuum and a few cars behind me got a free trip to another galaxy. There are few times I have smiled that wide, and 99% of those involved alcohol and fake *****. I zipped in and out of traffic feeling like Godzilla behind the wheel. By the time I made it back to the dealership I had forgotten what day it was..It was almost as if nothing else mattered, I needed this car.

Needless to say, after a few brief negotiations back and forth it was done. I took the car and have never looked back. I have driven many cars in my lifetime, but to categorize this as such is a disservice to Mercedes and to Aufrecht & Melcher. This is what Astronauts would take to the moon if this thing could fly. I can't even look at BMW's the same anymore...I almost felt as though I had been kept under the stairs by an evil parent who wanted to keep the secret all to themselves.

In response to your "good" and "bad" comments, all I can say is this. Getting dirty quickly is this car's way of saying wash me all the time, I am not a Honda. Burning up the gas is how you feed the beast, You can't feed Ramen noodles to Adrian Peterson and expect him to run 150 yds a game. Paying for maintenance is like the best doctor's for your kid, No one wants the C student from Wichita State performing heart surgery on your son.

This all costs money, but anything that makes you smile from simply sitting in the garage deserves to be an attention *****. She may be the most expensive girlfriend I have ever had, but she has yet to leave me stranded and has never failed to make me happy. Worth every penny

Call me crazy but I do. Had the 55 first but just could not part with it when I reloaded with the 63, to many fond memories.

Even when the car is sitting dusty in the garage from a week parked, I still stare at it.

Assuming the car is stock, the way to tell on an 07 to 09 E63 is the unique wheels and ride height. A P30 car kinda looks dropped. But the easiest way is to look at the wheels. The P30 has a specific type of 5-star wheel with the little bolts around the inner wheel.

This is an older post but I'm renewed in the forum after a long time. First off, very funny. That kind of sick car humor is rare but we can all relate. I had two black Mustang GT's. Told myself beforehand don't do it. Asked myself afterward, why did I do it? You can make them look good from a distance, most of the time. But you see your car up close and it almost never looks like you want it to. In my decision of an E55 or E63 I was leaning toward black but your post brought me to my senses. I better print it out and tape it to the bathroom mirror.

Well, if you don't like black you could always get Designo Graphite

Thank you! I just re-read it again, and was transported back to when I wrote it....good times.

Being brought back to your senses when considering an E55 or E63 is a hard thing to do. LOL!

Great reading! Thanks for that, I feel the same way about my car, I've had it since July and still go out to the garage and just stare at it.

Eh, it's a silver, I forget what color MB calls it. It has an awesome greenish tint to it in the sun though.

Thanks! I finally pryed the keys away from my wife (to get the winter tires put on) and just smiled when I fired up the car and heard that exhaust bark and growl to life. I really love driving this car so very much.

Awesome write-up! I feel the same way about the E55 I picked up a few months ago. She has some issues that need addressing (supercharger clutch, massage seats), but damnit if this isn't the best automobile I've ever owned and I've owned a LOT. I wanted a W211 E55 as long as I can remember, but couldn't swing the $95K price tag, nor would I pay that much for a car anyway. I found my black 05 w/pano, dynamic seats, parktronic and 59K miles at a BMW dealership. The original owner traded it in for an X6M and I had searched all over California and neighboring states for a 55 with reasonable mileage and pano without any luck. So I end up finding this one with all the right options but the damn thing was black which I swore I would never own again. Said the same thing as you, "I'll go test drive it without any intention of buying," lol. After seeing and driving it, I had to have it right then and there. Picked it up for $32K and they detailed it out and fixed some curb-rash before I took it. So far, I've added HRE 540R wheels, upgraded HE pump, BMC race filters and just ordered a Eurocharged ECU + TCU tune. More mods are also coming. This car just does it all and I won't be getting rid of it anytime soon. There's nothing else out there right now that is the total package like this beast. I had an '02 E55 that I really enjoyed, but this car takes luxury and performance to another level and she's one sexy *****! I test drove an E63 and new M3 DCT and I was still dead-set on the E55. My next car is the 2012 GT-R but this E55 won't be going anywhere. Long live AMG!

Note: previous vehicles were 750HP 91 GMC Syclone, 06 EVO IX MR SE, 02 E55 AMG, C4 Vette, and bunch of sportbikes (GSX-R 1000, 750, R1, etc.)

My story. Owned a bmw 633, graduated to a 1985 Dinan modded M635 w/ virtually every possible mod from Dinan, glass moonroof [which is uber rare] ***** out stereo, valentine, fiske 3 piece forged rims etc. etc. The car turns heads whenever I drive it, handles like its running on rails and very fast (or at least I thought it was; see below) Wife owned a 380SEC then a w210 e320. I was the die hard bimmer fan & she has always had mercedes mania. Then she hit the garage, the stone wall, and the parking garage beam at our office within months of each other & announced she wasn't driving any more. The catch; she hates the bimmer; the full race suspension is too "bumpy" and too low so she insists I chauffer her around in the E320. Then some jerk crunches a fender in the parking lot and flees the scene. I decide if I have to drive her everyday and if it has to be a Mercedes then I want a better one. I had always wanted an AMG (even before the BMW) ever since I saw a beverly hills motoring accesories catalog picture of an early 80s AMG in my dentists office. I looked at a black on black e55 but didn't really get to drive it "aggresively" and remained interested but not overly impressed. I made a low ball offer on the car and 6 hours later they sold the car to someone not nearly as frugal as I was. I too have owned a black car & am well aware of all that means regarding maintenance which prompted my reticence but I admit I was disappointed nonetheless. While on a trip to Oahu (for you non-Hawaii residents that means I was on a completely different island) Stumbled across a silver e63 and decided to test drive it on a lark. I scared the salesman test driving it, went to the bank and emptied out my ebay account and drove it to my in-laws that night. Could not wait till it was shipped to me and now am very happy to ferry my wife around wherever she wants to go. This car is truly the best car I've ever owned. It is almost as fast as my hot rodded 68 camaro in a straight line, almost as fast as my 911sc around corners, a whole lot more comfortable than any of my other rides, and almost as good looking as the M635. The thing of it is that while it may not be the best in any one thing [except for creature comforts] it does everything better than most. It truly is a daily driver, a car you don't hesitate to jump in for a 400 mile trip across the island knowing you won't be exhausted from rowing a muncie 4 speed or stomping on a racing stiff clutch (those of you who have driven Euro M635s will know of what I speak) or have ringing ears from that air cooled flat six (not to mention the misaligned spine from that awkward Porsche pedal placement). Don't get me wrong; I love those other cars for what they are but the E63 keys are what are usually in my hand when I leave the house because as a daily driver it just can't be beat. Now if someone would just make dustless brakepads for this car life would be perfect. Am I the only one who carries shop towels and 409 in their car because that damn brake dust blackens the rims every single time they drive the car?

Just reread this for the third time. It is timeless and reflects my ownership of a black E63 perfectly. If you haven't read this go back to the original post and enjoy. Thanks to the OP for this classic.

Thank you for the compliments! I really loved that car, and still miss it to this very day. I reached out to the current owner a few months ago and advised him that if he ever sold it, I would like to buy it back. Such an amazing car, and it got me hooked on the world of AMG for keeps! They are just so very special.
