New E63 owner, couple of questions...

Hey all, new (to me) owner of an 07 E63 with 37k miles. I have an owner's manual and I'm slowly figuing out the car, but I do have a few questions that I have been unable to resolve so far.

Is there a way to turn off the navi screen completely? I live in the country and even the night setting is too bright at night. My past 4 cars all have had some sort of switch to turn off the screen completely and still have tunes..

Are voice commands limited to only the stereo and phone functions? I can't find a list of commands that I can use and the car never understands what I am saying. A couple of my recent cars would allow you to speak an address, adjust temp etc.

I'd like to get some AMG floor mats, any recommendations on where to buy? I also need a spare tire/rim but really don't want to spend $400 at the dealer for one. I also need one more key as the car only came with one, is the dealer the only option?

I don't think you can shut off the screen and keep the system on, but I do think you can adjust the Brightness.

Try pinging the dealer for a copy of the Voice Command manual. It's pretty much only for the Nav system (phone/music/nav). I use it just to make a couple calls. I can do everything else faster by hand.

You can't turn out the NAV screen while keeping the radio on, but you can dim it
The voice commands are limited to the radio and phone, as this was MB first attempt at retrofitting voice control into the existing COMAND. The 08-09 got better, now the 10-11 are nice. My COMAND in my C63 is sweet. But Mercedes is still trailing manufacturers like Ford and their SYNC, and Lexus etc. My dealer will sell you AMG floor mats ofr $150, can't comment on the spare. I'm surprised that your missing the collapsable spare.

fwiw, the 2009 has the same new functions as the 2010-11. The 2008 has the same functionality as the 2007. HDD, music register, full VC, exact street numbers, traffic, Zagat, etc.. Except of course without the screen higher up in the dash and the knob selector (the W211 screen placement is pretty bad and forces you to look down all the time.)

But even the latest COMAND is still poor compared to other brands. Porsche's is so-so but the latest touchscreen version of PCM 3.0 is much better. BMW's iDrive and Audi's MMI are better. So is Jaguar's. And of course the Japanese (esp Acura) are light years ahead.

btw, you can download .pdf versions of the COMAND manual here: http://www.mercupgrades.com/Mercedes...rticle-60.html

Thanks for all of the feedback, I appreciate it. Stopped by the local dealership today, not only were they fairly arrogant and indifferent, the prices were insane. $700+ for a spare tire? For real? $165 for the little plastic front license plate bracket?? Coming from a Jag I'm used to expensive parts, but this is crazy! What sources do you all recommend to find parts, both used and new?

Pushing Tin, my friend who is the shop foreman and AMG Master Tech, at American Service Center (ASC) here in Arlington VA, told me to torque the wheels to 110 ft/lbs. Other people may tell you differently, but this is what I have been doing.Yuille36

This seemed really high to me. It should be 110Nm, or 81ftlbs.

Reference here, last page

and ft/lbs is not the unit, it is ft*lbs.

I originally thought it was 81 lbs/ft as well but thats for MBs with 12mm wheel bolts (C Class)
110lb/ft is for 14mm wheel bolts (Our cars)

Thanks Yuille, I looked in the owner's manual and it said 96 ft/lbs. I ended up around 105 and split the difference. Amazing there is such a discrepancy.

Actually, I think there is an option to turn off the COMAND display while keeping the system on. If you go into the Service menu, somewhere in there is an option to turn the display off.
I could be wrong, but I know for sure the COMAND system in the ML, CLK, etc has this option, as does the COMAND in the S550, CL, etc. I can't recall as to whether the version used in the '08 and older cars has this, but there's a good chance it does.

ft/lbs is simply a unit of measurement that is often used to specify, for example, the tightness of a bolt.

Good luck with your car. If you ever need any help with any aftermarket parts feel free to get in touch and I will help you out with anything that you need.

To elaborate on ft-lbs:

Foot-Pounds is a unit of measure for something called Moment of Force. It's the twisting force applied to something. Think of it this way, if your arm was 1 foot long (you'd have really frickin' short arms) and you held a 1 pound weight at the end, you'd have 1 foot-pound of moment. 1 foot multiplied by 1 pound of force. Torque us measured in foot-pounds. It's the force of the twisting motion the engine can create. Also notice it's distance TIMES force, not divided by. You also see it expressed in Newton-Meters. 1 Newton (a metric unit of force) times a meter.

my point was ft/lbs is not a torque. Distance divided by force is meaningless.

ft-lbs or ft*lbs is torque.

Good for you looking in the owners manual. I did the same and found the same answer.

Here is a source for the 130Nm number.

Any issue with having them cranked down to 105 or so? Or is the difference tolerable?

"Observe a tightening torque of 96 lb-ft (130 Nm)"

The above is a factoid for the E63. I had a slow leak a few months ago and checked with my dealer. I also checked with the tire place where I got new tires. After the new tires and driving for a while, I went to a different dealer for them to check the torque again (which the tire place said to do after putting on some miles.) They also said 96 lb-ft. You definitely don't want to over tighten them.

Okay I'll loosen them up and try and get closer to that. Only drove for a day at 105.

btw, to turn the display off on the COMAND screen:

1) settings ----> display off
2) to turn it back on just tap either the back button or the enter button, or any of the up/down/forward buttons.

Then you can then run the radio, phone, or nav with the steering wheel buttons using the IC display with the screen completely off and black. I use it that way a lot and with voice control to operate it. That way I have the screen totally blacked out at night if I want.

This works on the 2009 W211 which was the last model and with the newest COMAND system. Not 100% sure if it's the same with the earlier systems, but you should be able to still turn off the screen that way.....
